No matter what liberals will always vote liberal. So this is not likely to change because of a shutdown.

I wonder whether third parties might be able to use this shutdown as a away to get more votes (by campaigning essentially on the basis of "both major parties are acting like children, vote for us")

It will be interesting to see how it works. I know in 2012 there was a district in I believe Kansas where with no Democratic candidate a Libertarian got 31% of the vote. Seats like that are probably winnable for third parties.
