NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS. EVALUATION SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT. FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES. ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. By Sara Lin 11/19/2012 Courtesy of NOAA's Pacific Marine Environment Lab Every time Hawaii issues a tsunami warning, it's an "all or nothing" evacuation. From Waianae to Hawaii Kai, everyone who lives within a potential tsunami inundation zone heads for the hills — or the other side of the evacuation line, at least. But federal scientists have developed new tsunami forecasting models that can accurately predict where a wave will hit, and where it will flood. They've also designed new buoys that could help the tsunami warning center fill the gaps in its net. So why hasn't Hawaii embraced the new technology? The Oct. 27 tsunami warning threw Hawaii into a panic with just three hours between the evacuation call and when the first wave hit. Now, some say these new technologies are worth a closer look. . . . Predicting Where the Wave Will Hit Tsunami forecasting is a very new technology, one that's come into vogue since the 2004 Indonesian tsunami that killed 230,000. Eight years later, scientists have developed a tsunami flood forecasting model that they've tested on more than 40 events this year alone. "This idea to forecast tsunami flooding has been the holy grail of tsunami research," said Vasily Titov, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Tsunami Research. "This idea has been around for years, but the problem is we've never had models accurate enough and never had data. But now we do." With the Oct. 27 tsunami, Titov said the models did what they were supposed to do. "We nailed the amplitudes pretty well before the first tsunami arrived," he said. "But it didn't ease the weight of the decision to evacuate or not evacuate. It was a borderline event, it was difficult to call.". . . [link to www.civilbeat.com] |

Quoting: quirk This means the buoys are picking up movement, when they event usaully there is no tsunami affliated with it but in most cases it will event after or before a 6 + earthquake (it can be hours or days before and after the eq occurs), in a tsunami or large eq event you will normally see many buoys start eventing in the surrounding area Buoy info [link to www.bom.gov.au] There are times the buoy events due to malfunction, swarm of eq's in the same area (such as the latest Indonesia swarm in which there were many 4 and 5's but nothing major), and it occasionally events with nothing major occurring (these are my observations from studying the buoys and event histories and readings for the last 2 years), Volcaoe activity has to be considered as well. Much thanks to both of you for clearing it up. I was kinda thinking that this might just be our next 'doom storm' but most likely, it wouldn't be. No GLP effect means higher chance of that happening so... Whenever you see two in event mode that start eventing (not after a major eq), it is a cause to be alert that high probaility of movement on the way in the near future, unfortunately not even close to an exact science in to predicting a time or place. . . maybe some day? |
