Posting for comparison to Chile EQ's Pattern The intensity seems greater this time around Hi M1, I agree, unfortunately I think the larger one is coming sooner rather than later, the seismologist in the news continually emphasize that the 8,2 was not the Big one they are waiting for, and stated "it could come today or 50 years" "This magnitude 8.2 is not the large earthquake that we were expecting in this area," said Mark Simons, a geophysicist at Caltech in Pasadena, California. Scripps seismologist Gabi Laske said that the tsunami added about two inches to the height of waves at the gauge at 5 a.m. Wednesday, just over 12 hours after the earthquake happened. "In La Jolla, the first "weird" wiggle arrived at about this time," Laske told U-T San Diego. "While we could debate whether San Diego had a tsunami, it was clearly measured at the Santa Monica tide gauge station. Arriving at about 5:30 a.m., the biggest wave came at 7:10 a.m. at 6.3 inches. While I wouldn't stick my head out for the San Diego/La Jolla data, the Santa Monica data are very clear. "The signal at the Santa Barbara station is very concerning. The first wave there also arrived at about 5:30 a.m., the first "big" wave (at 7 inches) at 6:45 a.m. But "big" waves were still recorded at 9:50 a.m. (at 7.5 inches). My guess is that waves bounced off the coast and then joined and added together later on. All these numbers are +/-, so peak-to-trough amplitude is twice that. While that sounds logical, there are variables… Actually, the distance a tsunami will travel inland has more to do with the energy it still has left as it hits the shore. A tsunami will speed across the ocean at hundreds of miles an hour but at a relatively small height (because the ocean is DEEP). Its speed decreases as it approaches the shoreline (because the ground beneath it is getting shallower) but its energy begins to transfer to its monstrous HEIGHT. When the speed of the wave approaches zero, the wave breaks, much of its energy is released and it will not go too much further. A tsunami that reaches a height of 300 feet when it rears up at the shore, will lose energy as it travels inland. . . .
