Only because sports at one point had a purpose that wasn't all ego. It was about making yourself better and pushing past that line instead of only doing what is required.

Now the only reason ANYONE mainstream likes it is because it is associated with the dollar sign.

Another key point is that it is reflective of the times, and you can see with all of the new rules and regulations in and out of the game that things aren't good.
