UNSTABLE COMET- 73P-C Now Beginning To Break Apart!!!

At this point I think it's incredibly naive to think we will not have some sort of major impact from of 73P's fragments. We are not out of the woods until the first part of June, so don't rest on your laurels thinking the danger has passed just yet.

"UNSTABLE COMET: Comets have heads and tails. It's that simple. So what's happening to comet 73P-C? It looks more like an hourglass. Its pinched shape is "increasing dramatically," says Clay Sherrod of the Arkansas Sky Observatories.
3P-C is the biggest and until now the sturdiest fragment of dying comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. While other fragments fell apart in recent weeks, fragment C held together. The suddenly pinched shape may signal an overdue breakup.
Glowing like an 8th magnitude star, fragment C remains an easy target for big backyard telescopes. Look for it in the eastern sky just before dawn." |

Is it possible a debris field could be left behind that the earth would then pass through after 73P-C is gone? |

And I'm going to disagree with you that it's a meaningful event. Yes to scientists and researchers, but not to the rest of the world.
The only reason ANY of us were even aware of this is because they told us about it. We could not SEE it... it had no effect on anyone except for time spent on imaginary scenarios.
It's all over except for the laggers like the OP who can't let go of the hope that this signalled the end of the world.
And it didn't.
So yes, OP, it's growing tiresome, but knock yourself out. 'Cause you just never know - do you? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82821 (OP) 5/19/2006 10:13 AM | | Re: UNSTABLE COMET- 73P-C Now Beginning To Break Apart!!! | Quote | The odds are if there is an impact, it will hit an ocean. So, like Julien and Robertson say, the main threat from such a scenario will be a tsunami. If you are on a coastline when this happens there's not much preparing one can do.
As I look around, I have noticed valleys which have creeks far below their tops and have wondered how such streams could have cut such wide valleys and then it dawned on me...
...what if these valleys were created when waves from an ocean impact swept over the land and inundated the streams far upstream where these rivers and streams are, and caused massive carving of the land. From the looks of it, you would need massive quantities of water to create the valleys as we see them now. |

Lagging in its orbit?
According to whom? What measurements support this claim? Lagging by how much?

It's simple logic that a 20 meter stream couldn't do the task. |

By "lagging" I mean that the comet is moving faster than the Earth and when 73P-C does cross earth's orbit, the earth will be far behind 73P-C. |

You are either or not very informed. Get some geography/geology lessons first. Sorry for bashing you.
Thinking that tsunamis created those ridges and valeys... is ... childish at least. |

My under control what?
and always will be "I've had two teenagers who were considering killing themselves, because they didn't want to
be around when the world ends. Two women in the last two weeks said they were contemplating
killing their children and themselves so they wouldn't have to suffer through the end of the world."
