I have a $50 food gift certificate for Walmart.
I have about 10 lbs of rice, a few jars of peanut butter, 10lbs of flour.
What are the top things I should get for SHTF to increase my pantry?

If you go to sam's club, you can get 50lbs of rice for 17 and change and 50 lbs of beans for 34 and change. Ramon noodles are a good thing too. Get spices from the dollar store. There's some options. :D

Awesome! I just have that nagging feeling like I really should have some extras- these are some great ideas.

I heard somewhere that dried beans (except for black?) and rice can be "cooked" just by soaking in water for a long time- can anyone confirm this?

Rice is definitely on my 'to get' list. Ramen is a good idea too- I think each pack is 12 cents right now, so a whole month would only cost a few bucks. The beans in sauce- great idea, but I haven't seen those here.

Canned chili (with beans) is good as far as calories for the $.

Wolf Brand With Beans (~$1.50 15oz) 350 calories, 170 calories from fat (which is good with winter approaching), 25g carbs, 18g protein, 8g fiber.

Wolf Brand NO Beans (~$1.50 15oz) 370 calories, 240 calories from fat (pretty high, but not that bad with winter approaching), 16g carbs, 16g protein, 6g fiber.

50 bucks?

If thats your budget you might just as well buy beer.

$50 of food will only prolong the misery a couple days.

Also, sometimes you can find lesser cuts of meat at a bargain, which can be sliced thinly, marinated and dehydrated in the oven (not cooked, can find different methods online, helps to leave oven door cracked for air circulation) to make jerky. Instant meals when on the go.

I dunno about beans It would take a looong time if possible as sometimes I let them soak for 2-3 days straight and it's still nowhere edible without cooking them. Soaking legumes is a must too to remove phytic acid, brown rice isn't advised as the phytic acid is too hard to remove

There's not a whole hell of a lot one can pack for go time--I'm headed to the woods for a bit if town gets too crazy...I'm hoping I can trap/fish/bowhunt once my peanut butter and protein bars are gone, but if that didn't work, I'll be doing the good ol cooking bugs and moss with a bit of cajun seasoning. Pine needles are great for Vit C too. yum.

I heard that pemmican, as long as the fat is rendered properly, is a great food- never made it tho.

I'm more looking to build up my home pantry. I have a few months of food at another location, but realized that I really didn't have a good store at my own home.

Funny, I just read an article last night about dehydrating meat in the oven. I'll definitely have to give it a try! I wonder what else could be dehydrated in the oven (apparently fruit leather doesn't work).

Is steel cut really better to get? I'm not really an oatmeal kind of person, but I remember being a kid and being full for most of the day from a bowlful, so definitely something I'll add.

For 'Emergency' food I also keep a large supply of Ramen soups. Things last forever. Just add water, or don't.

A closet full of those things will last yea a looooong time.
