COMET ISON New Details Emerge- due to rotational axis, new surface will be exposed to sun on close approach

“We measured the rotational pole of the nucleus. The pole indicates that only one side of the comet is being heated by the Sun on its way in until approximately one week before it reaches it closest point to the Sun,” said Planetary Science Institute Research Scientist Jian-Yang Li, who led a team that imaged the comet.

“Since the surface on the dark side of the comet should still retain a large fraction of very volatile materials, the sudden exposure to the strong sunlight when it gets closer to the Sun than Mercury could trigger huge outbursts of material,” Li said.

We measured the color of the coma, and found that the outer part of the coma is slightly redder than the inner part,” Li said. “This color change is unusual in comets, and seems to imply that the inner part contains some water ice grains, which sublimate as they move away from the nucleus.”

The expectation is high that Comet C/ISON will be much brighter and more spectacular than most other sungrazers when it puts on a show late this year.

Good info OP.

Just a week ago in here the latest word had been "it would be the comet of the year, but not of the century".

So many conflicting opinions and theories makes ISON more interesting.

Like the link too. Pretty much you'll get this type of info with .edu and the other viewpoint from .gov or MSM.

Thank you for sharing.

If Comet Holmes was the blue kachina (purifier), this is for sure the red kachina (destroyer).

wonder if the sudden exposure of the other side of the comet will alter its trajectory?

there was an article about this months ago, trying to find it

edit: here it is, saw this here couple months ago

So we have ISON close approach to earth on Christmas, and then we go through the tail in January

nope, and I can't find anything official coming from the observatory itself. may be a youtube hit and run, but still an interesting concept

Ison's tail debris was what I was worried about and I read that there is no fragmentation happening, which is good for us here on earth. It looks like a nice, normal comet with interesting features. The trajectory after perihelion isn't going to affect us from what I have gathered.

Re: COMET ISON New Details Emerge- due to rotational axis, new surface will be exposed to sun on close approach
either way, the comet was discovered near the orbit of Jupiter, which is the farthest we ever discovered a sungrazer before.

This is why everyone said it was going to be the comet of the century, because it was brightening so far away from the frost line, they extrapolated the data and thought it would be incredibly bright if it continued on like that.

The thing is, it didn't. It actually got dimmer for awhile near the frost line.
Light curve at link
[link to www.isoncampaign.org]

So here it is. ISON has one side that is mostly unexposed to the sun due to its rotation. We saw ISON get bright near JUPITER, and those same volatiles (except this time on the other side of the comet) will be exposed to the sun near MERCURY.

Looks like ISON is going to get really bright when it gets closer to the sun in November, and could still be bright in December.

they are saying the red part is water molecules on the comet. keyword here is slightly, it's still mostly green

This means the comet may be BRIGHTER then originally estimated. The estimations are already impressive indeed.
