This treaty has been in the works for a few years now, but you don't hear a lot about it like you did with GATT and NAFTA. They will keep it quiet until they are ready to spring it on us.

John Key arrives in Brunei flushed with TPP success video
US President Barack Obama has told Prime Minister John Key he is committed to completing the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Mr Obama has thanked Mr Key for successfully chairing a meeting on the proposed agreement between 12 countries, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bali.

The President cancelled his trip to the summit while he deals with a budget crisis that has shutdown the US government.

The two leaders spoke by phone and welcomed the agreement that the TPP member nations would work toward concluding negotiations this year.

Speaking to reporters on board a plane after leaving the East Asian Summit in Brunei, Mr Key said he spoke to President Obama for about 10 or 15 minutes.

Mr Key said he indicated to the President that there's a lot of work to be done between now and the end of the year on the agreement.
