Madeleine McCann: Tycoons withdraw support

Two millionaire businessmen who gave money to help find Madeleine McCann refused today to contribute to the legal fight to clear her parents' name.


The couple's official spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, has also decided to step down, it emerged this afternoon. Exhaustion, and the McCanns' need for a PR adviser with more legal experience, are said to be behind her decision.

Kate and Gerry McCann, 39, have hired top lawyers in Britain and Portugal after they were named official suspects in their daughter's disappearance.

Detectives believe Mrs McCann may have accidentally killed her daughter and relied on her husband to help cover up the crime. Although the couple insist the claims are baseless, the cost of trying to clear the "cloud of suspicion" is expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.
Although the fighting fund set up to find Madeleine has raised more than £1 million, the trustees said the couple - who did not want to take the money anyway - would not be able to make use of the funds.

One entrepreneur, who refused to be named because of the delicate nature of the case, has given his backing in the past.

But today he told the Evening Standard: "I am not going to contribute any more. It is a difficult issue and it is not something I propose to get engaged in.
"It is the most confusing scenario anybody has ever seen. I am not judge and jury and I hope what I am reading is wrong. I have not yet been approached [a second time] but I wouldn't put any money in.
"If they can turn the tide in some form maybe there will be loads of backers. But right now this does not look a good place to go."

A number of well known figures have publicly supported the McCanns including JK Rowling, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, Topshop owner Philip Green and EasyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.
A second wealthy businessman, who has given £100,000 to the fund, said: "We won't be pledging any more right now.

"I don't think that at the moment we would allow the money to be swapped to cover defence costs, but this is a difficult position and a very sensitive issue." The McCanns, from Rothley in Leicestershire, returned to the UK on Sunday, 48 hours after being declared suspects by Portuguese police.

Ms McGuinness, the McCanns' spokeswoman, is expected to step down this weekend if a replacement can be found in time.

Not since Dr. Crippen - long before the blizzard of 24/7 satellite media - will there have been a case like Madeleine McCann's if the now official suspicions of the Portuguese police turn out to have been well founded.

They have turned it into a circus, with daily appearances at mass and the flight to the Vatican to kiss the hand of the Pope, invoking celebrities, inducing millions of people around the world to raise a fortune in a campaign fund and turning their child into one of the iconic faces of our age.

So even Dante himself would find it difficult to describe any circle of the inferno fit for Kate and Gerry McCann if it all turns out to have been a lie.

I have been in and around the Ocean Club in the sleepy Algarve village of Praia da Luz for more than 20 years and it has been surreal enough watching its tiny cobbled streets bristling with television crews broadcasting around the world from a
once little-known holiday idyll.

And now this.

On my Talk Sport radio shows I have been critical of the McCanns from the start. Not least because I knew aspects of their story could not be true.

Their supposed constant vigilance of their three toddlers while they ate in a tapas bar and the children slept in an unlocked apartment was not possible. The distance between the two points was both greater and more convoluted than they said.

In any case, the children's bedroom was on the OTHER side of the apartment block and, though both doctors, neither parent possessed X-ray vision.

I said that if a single mother had left her three kids in the chalet at Butlins while she supped scampi and chips in the boozer, she would have immediately been attacked as a feral, feckless, unfit mother by the same media which was painting the grieving McCanns as the very embodiment of modern middle-class Britain.

For months I have watched that media poke ridicule at the supposed bumbling Inspector Clouseaus of the Portuguese police for their apparent leaden-footedness in the investigation.

Of course no Johnny Foreigner could be as good as our own police, who brought us the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six.

Now with this new development, the same media seems coiled like a spring to turn on the McCanns as they previously did on the other "suspect" Robert Murat.

Sensing they may have been made the biggest fools in history, the Press tables can be seen turning, the plates beginning to move.

Of course, the most xenophobic commentators say the science which has led to the Mccanns being named as suspects is inherently suspect due to the foreign hands through which it has passed, oblivious to the fact that it came from British laboratories.


If Madeleine's blood and other DNA evidence really has been found in the boot of her parents' hire car, there are only a few possible explanations. A previous renter of the car - it was 25 days after the child went missing that the family took

In these circumstances the Portuguese police really would be clots if they did not consider the girl's parents to be suspects.

Of course there could be other, some would say unlikely, possibilities.

The DNA and blood evidence in the boot may not, after all, be Madeleine's and the forensic scientists may be mistaken.

The blood in the boot of the McCanns' hire car may be somebody else's, in which case Goodfellas comes to the Algarve and the family are the victims of the most grotesque coincidence.

The DNA could have been planted in the boot of the McCanns' car, presumably by the police.

The sort of thing which happened to Mr O J Simpson.

The McCanns have either been the victims of a cataclysmic historic injustice, almost unprecedented, or they have been complicit in a scheme so duplicitous, so evil, so foul that Shakespeare himself could not have written it.

Either way, the name McCann is now well and truly in the history books.

I wonder why the Paynes were the only members of the Tapas party not to be named in the Panorama programme last night.

Brian Kennedy No Longer Paying for the Maddie Campaign

Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for the McCanns, confirmed that Brian Kennedy, the British millionaire who financed the McCann couple, has stopped paying salaries “months ago”.

The statement was made by Clarence Mitchell himself after his speech, last Friday in an association of the Oxford University - the Oxford Union – where the former director of the control unit for the British Media - Media Monitoring Unit - spoke about his career as a journalist, the media industry and his role in the Maddie case. The millionaire Brian Kennedy who has once stated that he would be prepared to use the whole of his personal fortune – estimated at more than 500 million Euros in order to finance the alleged private investigations into the disappearance of Maddie, appears now to have abandoned his financial support for the couple.

Crimewatch lied about the distance of the Tapas bar from the apartment, they clearly stated 50 yards, the police report says 120 yards... They ignored the Payne's presence at the table...
The window and blind was closed, they portrayed it as open...

It's all a bit strange.

I haven't seen the crimewatch reconstruction yet, but I assume the Paynes were left out for obvious reasons.

If it was pre planned then.. then it was pre planned but where's the evidence of the sale?

I had an ex a few years ago who's mom had some psychic skill, that usually came across as dreams/visions. No she didn't do it for a living or anything, but she did have credibility. Had some dreams about a woman and actually called her local police, spoke with a detective, and actually ended up leading him to a dead body (10 or so years ago, up in Canada).

Anyway, this was a couple years ago, sometime in 2010. His mom told me she kept having dreams about this Madeline girl. That she was alive, being kept somewhere, maybe in a basement. Said horrible things were being done to her, would not tell me what, so I'm assuming she was being regularly molested. She had dreams about her regularly, for a series of weeks, she didn't know why she was having them - she thought maybe time was running out, even though she felt Madeline was alive, maybe she wouldn't be much longer? Again, that was her thought on the matter, like there was sense of urgency. Anyway, every night before bed she started asking for a name, kept saying she can't do
anything without a name. Finally she got a first and last name. She did a search on MySpace and one of the first results was one of a guy in the UK I believe. Said it was definitely not the parents. His mom ended up sending the find Madeline website the name of the guy and descriptions from the dreams, but they never contacted her back - so who knows what happened. She stopped having dreams about her after that - and the ex and I split a few months after so I don't know anymore than that.

I'm not saying I believe it, but I do know some people have abilities, and I know his mom wasn't making shit up.

But if someone was casing the resort for a child, they would have noticed that the children had been left alone each night that week and then targeted those children. I can see the pre-planned angle.

But I can't get past the dogs and the DNA. It's either the best set up in history, or the best cover up in history.

I was thinking about the suspect that was carrying the child near the apartment, who after 6 years has now been cleared as a dad carrying his child back from the creche. I think this is a little suspect. I checked to see what times of the creche and discover they do a "Dining Out Club" at Ocean Club, that runs until 11pm.

On crimewatch last night, in the reconstruction they showed this man with his child walking at the top of the road ( walking on the corner of the car park at the front of the apartment and crossing the road. I wanted to find out where the creche was that provided the "dining out club" babysitting service to see if that was the direction the person would be walking from. I could not find where the creche was ( if anyone could find it that would would be great) but I did find a interview of someone who was holidaying out there that and returned just after the disappearance of Maddie. He stated that the creche was a 5 minute walk from where the McCanns were staying but it was a windy walk through the apartments on cobbles paths, and was a reason that put most families off using the service as they didnt want to wake their kids.

Looking at google maps and the direction the dad and his child were walking from it was not clear of any area where the creche would be, like I said if someone could find it that would be great. I have a feeling that this dad with child which Tanner had reported is fictional. I also thought it strange when Tanner said she walked passed Gerry outside the apartment chatting to a friend, in the reconstruction it showed that she did not even acknowledge him.

I think the McCanns know more that what they are letting on and either way the are guilty for leaving 3 very young children alone and should be brought to court on charges of child neglet.

Mr Edwards has a fascinating family history. Born on 31 August 1962 according to his entry on Geni.Com, he married Reina Hazenberg and they have three boys, all of whom were out with Philip in Praia da Luz for the week the McCanns were there. But not his wife Reina, so it seems. We also know from the Portuguese Police files that he mysteriously jetted off to Switzerland, where he lives, early on Friday morning (4 May 2011), apparnetly cutting short his holiday just as news was surfacing that a child had been abducted from Praia da Luz.

The Universal Child Database was set up in 2004, as part of the Children Act 2004. It cost £224m to set up and £41m a year to run and was backed by Margaret Hodge.
