When it crosses earth's orbit in late December it will be ahead of earth, for both the old and new orbits which differ by less than 12000 miles at that time.

If this guy is who you all think is 'great', you may want to reconsider. In this vid he is certainly better than MrCartoonwatcher (aka BPEarthwatch), but he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground about science, and he'd be lost without the JPL orbit toy.
Be careful with what he says since he seems to get most of it wrong.
Should he start crying "DOOM!!!!", remember that he doesn't know what he's talking about and 12 year olds can make RubeTube vids pretending to have knowledge of that which they are ignorant.

Ugh! Don't use the stupid java applet to guess the close approach distance. It just uses 2-body methods to approximate the orbit. The exact figures are given in the close approach data table on the same page!

So in other words, even my old solution is within about 0.000055 AU or 8000 km of NASA's latest calculation, even though I specifically excluded all observations from September or later.
