96496,

You know why this isn't a crash? Because it happens in phases, and while there is a small degree of 'panic', there's nothing out of the ordinary that can be defined as a crash.

Mind, all these losses (except for Bombay and the Middle East) are well below the 5% threshold. And even if a market falls by 5%, it still isn't a crash.

Here the "mainstream" report...........GLOBAL MARKETS-Commodities tumble rocks stocks, bonds rally
Mon May 22, 2006 7:03 AM ET
(Updates prices, quotes, policymaker comments)

By Lincoln Feast LONDON May 22 (Reuters) - Tumbling prices for copper, gold oil and other commodities rattled global financial markets on Monday, sending equity indexes to their lowest levels in months and boosting safe-haven government bonds.

GLOBAL MARKETS-Commodities tumble rocks stocks, bonds rally
UPDATE 6-Gold, silver tumble on dollar-related selling
European stocks cautiously edge up, Arcelor leaps
European policymakers sought to calm investors, saying asset market corrections were normal and that the euro was near its fair value, helping the single currency erase early losses against the dollar.

But attention was focused on metals markets with spot gold <XAU=> sliding as much as $20 to around $639 an ounce as funds booked profits from the metal's spectacular rally over the past year.

Three-month copper <MCU3> extended Friday's 6.7 percent fall with another 2 percent decline.

The metal, used in electronics and construction, has plunged 17 percent since hitting an all-time high of $8,800 a tonne earlier this month but has still risen by two-thirds this year.

Analysts said the recent volatility in metals markets was unnerving for investors, and largely unwarranted.

"Much like the rapid pace in which metals prices shot forward, the retracement is largely detached from conventional fundamental factors that typically underlie these markets," Peter Richardson, chief metals economist at Deutsche Bank, said in a note.

"Rising demand in both OECD and industrialising countries coupled with persistent shortage of physical supply currently characterises the base metals market and will continue to support strong prices regardless of the ebb and flow of speculative investor money."

Diversified miner Rio Tinto (RIO.L: Quote, Profile, Research) highlighted the continued tightness in the iron ore market, agreeing a 19 percent rise in prices for lump iron ore with South Korean steel maker POSCO (005490.KS: Quote, Profile, Research), in line with earlier deals in Japan.

MINERS LEAD STOCKS DOWN

Shares in Rio, however, fell sharply along with other mining stocks as the metal markets' turmoil took its toll.

The DJ Stoxx basic resource sector <.SXPP> led declines in Europe, with the FTSEurofirst 300 Index <.FTEU3> down 1 percent at 1,293.4 points, but off an earlier four-month low of 1,280.4 points.

"A reduction in risk appetite appears under way and is taking a toll on global equities and emerging markets," said JP Morgan economists.

"At the source of this adjustment lies the interaction of monetary policy and global reflation."

U.S. light crude prices <CLc1> fell 1.5 percent to a six-week low around $67.50 a barrel on worries that global growth will suffer from higher inflation and higher interest rates.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei average <.N225> gave up its earlier gains and closed 1.8 percent lower, below 16,000 points for the first time in more than two months, as oil prices pressured energy-related stocks.

Government bonds benefited from the upheaval as investors sought the assuredness of interest rate products.

The yield on benchmark 10-year euro zone government bonds <EU10YT=RR> sank to 3.93 percent, its lowest level in a month. Comparable U.S. 10-year Treasury yields <US10YT=RR> fell to test the 5.00 percent level.

The dollar was up 0.5 percent against the yen <JPY=> at 112.35 yen, with the yen extending losses made late last week after the Bank of Japan said it was in no hurry to raise interest rates from near zero.

The euro <EUR=> was up slightly against the dollar, trading at around $1.2770 after International Monetary Fund Managing Director Rodrigo Rato said recent price changes on currency markets had been smooth and in the right direction.

Finance ministers from Greece and the Netherlands also said they were not concerned about the level of the euro, which has risen 8 percent against the dollar this year.

Johnny, this is not manufactured. American stock exchanges all lower as expected. Euro's up, inflation fear is everywhere and furthermore, investors fear that the dollar might start a serious decline in the coming weeks/months/years.

It's fear for realistic things that aren't set up by 'evil men in cubicles'.

NYSE in $21bn Euronext merger bid

Euronext shareholders will meet on Tuesday to discuss the firm's fate
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has unveiled plans to merge with the pan-European Euronext exchange.
The proposed move would create a transatlantic stock market giant worth $21bn (16bn euros; £11bn).

If successful, the merger bid would trump rival plans by Germany's Deutsche Boerse for a tie-up with Euronext.

Competition between exchanges has been increasing, and analysts are predicting more mergers as the companies look to cut costs and boost client numbers.

Earlier this year, Euronext called off its attempts to buy the London Stock Exchange after US firm Nasdaq increased its stake. Since then, Nasdaq has continued to build its holding, and said on Friday it now had now topped 25%.

This bit of info from a VERY RELIABLE source....someone who trades and KNOWS THE MARKET.....for over 15 years now....here is what they have to say about what is going on in India....

<<The US market has had a nasty correction. It usually but not always influences some other markets. India has had a lot of hot money and also money from people who never had done it before. It's not unusual. In terms of our markets here---- we have had 8 days of correction.
People are looking to see if we can hold here and get a bit of a bounce. Nothing unusual there either. This is all part of market behaviour.>>

Johnny, several months ago many of GLp and including you were posting in threads about 'the bottom falling out of the markets' and saying that the end for the fiat-based economy is near, etc.

Well, nothing happaned in the direct aftermath of that correction and it is most likely that this will not escalate unless the dollar starts taking heavy hits or inflation is beginning to show its ugly head more clearly.
