camera settings are well known. the only difference in the first and the seventh picture is the shutter time. and as I wrote, the dots do not make the same movement. They move unlogical

Nice pics OP,

I saw this object on 7-13-13. I watch the sky but I have not seen it in my area since July. When it appeared I thought how strange it was to see this red object. I have watched stars change colors and this one remains orange/red. I made a video of it. It looks like the pics you have. Here are some pics I took from the video. Wish I knew what it was. The moon was out although it was still light out.

it looks like the red thing comes out of some vortex. Use photoshop and its power to detail thing your eyes won't see

in digital pixels are everything, they are the equivalent of film size

In both cases you need an amazing lens to get clear shots (and a telescope to bolt it too would be boss)

of course, seeing a thing like a vortex means is this case the vortex must be huge. just a little colour difference is all you need

UPDATE:
----------------------------

I am the OP. Looks like the folks who said it was Venus were right after all. I set up my tripod, and took pictures for over an hour, starting at sunset, until way after.

The orange object I saw last night, is actually only orange right before it disappears behind the horizon (probably atmospheric distortion).

Here's a picture (at 15-seconds of exposure) of the same object I took pictures of last night. It was taken at 7:48 PM, Mountain Time, from Provo, Utah, facing about 225 degrees (southwest):

[link to download.johncoltharp.com]

The object in question is the largest one you see in the sky. I watched it change from from white to orange as it gradually slipped behind the horizon.

Am I right in saying this is Venus? You have plenty of reference stars now.

Good job OP! That's how you do it. Plenty of reference stars.

Yup that's Venus. Your pic side-by-side with Stellarium: [link to i.imgur.com]

edit: OP, you should update your original post to include this new info.

In case you missed it. The OP went out the next night and took a better photo of the object. It was Venus. Read his post above.

It is precisely because it is fashionable for Americans to know no science, even though they may be well educated otherwise, that they so easily fall prey to nonsense. They thus become part of the armies of the night, the purveyors of nitwittery, the retailers of intellectual junk food, the feeders on mental cardboard, for their ignorance keeps them from distinguishing nectar from sewage. — Isaac Asimov

the sun its light reflects on a planet. therefore it is almost always possible to find the sun his position by looking at a picture of an planet where the greatest light bubble is. Of course the picture is 2 dimensial so exacyly is impossible.

someone in this thread has made enhanced pictures of the thing, the lightsource must be the sun but that does not fit i this case. It looks more like internal heat or light

sigh. I am telling you, pixels mean everything. Do you know how many pixels get dropped to convert an image from 600 or 300, down to the 72 pixels you get from the internet??? A lot. And in those dropped pixels is all the information you wish you had. If i had the original image it would be different, but all you are doing is messing around with a low res image. Anything you can come up with could likely be contributed to pixelation or compression. not actual phenomenon

Re: New PHOTOS of object in western sky everyone's been talking about, taken tonight!!!
I don't know what's going on with you, OP, but Venus...isn't...orange. It is...NEVER...orange. I've been watching the skies for several decades now and have seen Venus incalculable times and it...is...not...orange. Ever. It is a bright white "star". Always.

Now, I have never seen the object that people are discussing on multiple threads and other sites and probably won't unless it changes position in the sky, but apparently it might be close enough to Venus to cause a misidentification based on location alone.

But I have to tell you once again....if you saw something orange in the night sky....regardless of what shows up on the camera...that is NOT Venus. Venus IS NOT ORANGE. ANY TIME.
