download superantispyware. Your computer is infested with tracking cookies and maybe Trojans.

download glary utilities. Cleans up your registry and clears lots of temporary files.

both are free. run them at least once every day.

What cpu and how much memory do you have.
Does it run hot?

Check task manager for any zombie processes

do the systems check as prescribed above, but more often than not, unless you go to some raunchy sites or to itunes, the anti virus will be the one taking o\up your ram with their own form of mafia style protection.

especially the free ones.

Back up your shit and reinstall windows. Guaranteed to solve your problems unless its hardware related

Yes, but worth it! I've been runing free avast! for over five years now and it's kept my computer from 'destruction' completely.

If you keep the rest of your drive fairly clean, for example, with glary utilities above, then the extra ram needed by the is no problem.

That's the experience of this mid-life housewife who never took a computer course in her life and knows next to nothing about them. Attaching a file to an e-mail is about my grade level. lol. Tks.

Look in configuration by map options if your hidden files are shown.(They should be)After that do a scan with Adware cleaner. [link to www.bleepingcomputer.com]
See if it finds anything..After that we will see further.

Not a bad idea. I would be in favor of this.

If the laptop still run sluggish after a fresh OS reinstall , then you definitely have bad hardware.
