I want everyone to know how much I appreciate your effort keeping track of these natural events. The constant updating has taken remarkable diligence. The analysis and opinions are very informative, both disconcerting and comforting.

Three outstanding facts are clear:
Ė ring faulting around Bardarbunga caldera: not good
Ė dike fissure is now 40km long, and already reaching out of the glacier.
Ė It is already inside Askja fissure swarm, and this rate it reaches the caldera within 4 days: also not good

Fourth thing, also not very good: a few quakes show up at Edlgjá. I am not sure about this, these have been showing up on and off the last few days (even before the Bardarbunga event). [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com]

Then we are definitely into lala-land where I would be doing splits and play lip-banjo.
Seriously, that option is giving me the shudders.
Basically right now we have Icelands two largest volcanic systems as potential feeders, add Askja (no 3 in scale) and you have a combination so nasty that it is not wholesome to contemplate. I do hope it will stop before that.

Seriously I donít want to think about the possibility of magma hitting the caldera of Askja at the same time as Bardarbunga caldera shakes with M5s and a 40km fissure opens in between.

This is developing too quickly in one of the worst case scenario. And while I donít wish to cause panic around (after all this is a public debate) we need to ponder about the possibility of such a scenario, how likely it is to develop, and what consequences it would have. But obviously we are entering a set of scenarios of which we know little about.

What would happen at the very worst? Two caldera eruptions, and a large rifting in between. Thatís a VEI6 event, probably in the order of 10+ km3 released material, in form of lava and tephra. Not pleasant to have Iceland covered with cms of ash, and also much gas killing many sheep. And also a few mms over the British Isles or Scandinavia. One just has to look back in Icelandís history to see how often such scenarios occurred.

So far cumulative seismic release does not point for a larger fissure. So thatís assuring. But the fissure is quickly propagating towards Askja and the conduit is already open at both Askja and between Bardarbunga caldera and the tip of the dike, currently outside of the ice cap.And worryingly the B caldera is showing large signs of strain, all around it.

Police searching for a California man with drug resistant tuberculosis:
August 2014 Ė CALIFORNIA
This manís illness is so serious that there was a warrant issued for his arrest. The young man, age 24, named Agustin Zeferino recently decided to stop treatment for his highly contagious disease. What are we talking about, a drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. He hadnít been seen at treatment for two weeks according to Santa Barbara County Public Health Officials. He has the most dangerous form of tuberculosis, which can be fatal if not treated. It is unclear at this time why he decided to discontinue his medical treatment. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is a very rare form the disease and is highly contagious. It is easily spread by coughing and sneezing. This is the second time a warrant has been issued for a tuberculosis patient refusing their treatment. In fact just last month Eduardo Rosas Cruz, 25 years of age, was arrested in Fresno.

Every hour I come to the laptop I see something new and worrying.

Now itís 8 quakes in Edlgjá fissure. No, it canít be.
And 1 quake in Veidivotn region, and a few more just north of Hekla, along old volcanic ridges.

Yes the entire Hreppar microplate is starting to respond to the sheer tectonic movements.

Meanwhile the dike of earthquakes is well outside of Vatnajokull and some quakes have been extending towards Herdubreid it seems, and not Askja.

Never Iceland has rifted more than 100km. Like in Veidivotn or Thjorsáhraun.

So far the dike is at a confirmed 30km, but possibly even reaching 40km in soon. And the earthquakes seem to show soil cracking along a line of 80km, well past Askja, towards Herdubreid.

Then, earthquakes in the dead zone, seem to be related to the major tectonic readjustments, I donít think they relate to any rifting (at least not now). But itís worrying to see them showing up too. The entire Bardarbunda rifting area is 200km long.
