MORE: No tsunami warning, reports of power, cell phone outages after Nazca plate movement triggers 7.0 quake in Peru

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southern Peru on Sunday 38 miles (61 km) east-northeast of the town of Puquio, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury. The quake struck at 23:21 GMT at the depth of 36.6 miles (58.9 km). The nearest city to the epicenter is Tambo, located just 26 miles (42 km) away. USGS revised the magnitude of the quake upwards from 6.9. An earthquake was triggered by a subduction of Nazca plate, located off the west coast of South America, RT Spanish cited experts as saying. No tsunami warning has been released by the authorities. Some network and electricity outages are being reported.

The Nazca Plate, named after the Nazca region of southern Peru, is an oceanic tectonic plate in the eastern Pacific Ocean basin off the west coast of South America. The ongoing subduction, along the Peru-Chile Trench, of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate is largely responsible for the Andean orogeny. The Nazca Plate is bounded on the west by the Pacific Plate and to the south by the Antarctic Plate through the East Pacific Rise and the Chile Rise respectively. The movement of the Nazca Plate over several hotspots has created some volcanic islands as well as east-west running seamount chains that subduct under South America. Nazca is a relatively young plate both in terms of the age of its rocks and its existence as an independent plate having been formed from the break-up of the Farallon Plate about 23 million years ago. The oldest rocks of the plate are about 50 million years old.

Nope...not at all.

"They" don't want to start a panic.

What is STRANGE is how several people have stated how different this earthquake felt, compared to Loma Prieta and Northridge.

I won't post it over there but I will here will I won't get bashed, hopefully....lol

Thursday and Friday, wee hours of the morning, I kept waking up hearing a buzzing sound. Very low frequency, deep sounding. Almost like an alarm clock, on a cell one that is.

Went outside to see if it was going on out there. Nothing. Sat down to have a smoke, and could hear/feel it again. Took off my sandals and went and stood in the grass. There it was again. So I sat down in the grass which was damp as it had rained a few hours earlier, and wow, it was strong.

This was early Friday morning that I did that. I got up each morning to look at the EQ's figuring there had been a quake....nothing in Colorado.
