Dave Stewart @d_stewCNN · 2 min Há 2 minutos Between TX & OK, I'm counting close to 50 #EARTHQUAKES in the last 2 days. That's a whole lot of shakin goin on, folks! Damon Hynes January 7, 2015 at 16:50 Dear Dallas: it’s not fracking–it’s magma. :-)
Reply GeoLurking January 7, 2015 at 17:48 Given the location, I can’t rule it out based on that.
The quakes are so small, that USGS is not providing a focal mechanism for them. Generally, if the quake is related to Frack operations, they are releasing energy that has already built up in the formation… as such, it’s much more pleasant to experience a lot of small low impact quakes than a larger single event that could pop-up due to the normal stress accumulation.
If it is magma, the area has a hell of a lot more to worry about than some contrived issue.

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12630340 There doesn't have to be a volcano for magma to move. Remember there is magma all below the earth's crust. Sometimes it is closer to the surface in some parts of the world than others. There is fear that fracking in areas that have shallow earth crust - or closer to magma - could cause volcanoes to pop where never seen before. Wish I could find the article that I read this about but it has been awhile. Not saying there is a volcano in Irving, but those seismos do look harmonic. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12630340 I lived in Austin for 8 years, so I understand where you are coming from. Yes, it is possible. If you know the area, it would be helpful to know if fracking is going on in the area, usually withing a few miles. When this started I blew it off as more fracking quakes, but I haven't seen a swarm there like this. I have researched and nothing shows up so this is an unique event. Keep in mind, OK has been having 100's of fracking quakes and nothing major has happened. |
