Quoting: WhiteAngel Oh yeah, you can really see it moving around now. It sorta weirds me out a bit. It looks uncomfortable! I can't wait to see that cute little bugger! Quoting: KickinIt Is her tail always out like that or is that new? I know they do that before defecating so wondering if it is a birth is near thing?? Was just laying flat and swishing, now back out. |

Quoting: WhiteAngel I started noticing that over the weekend. Sometimes it does that, but no poop, so I also wonder if that's a sign. she's so beautiful. I find myself mesmerized by her at times. And I love to watch them when they interact. It's all so interesting to me - I've never paid this much attention to giraffes before! I really hope I'm around when she gives birth - I'm very curious if they will allow the dad to stay in the pen next door, and if so, how he will respond. |

Quoting: KickinIt First time I was up close to one, was at the Albuquerque zoo. Its head was floor level where we were standing and it reached out with this huge long black tongue and my friend and I both squealed like little girls (we were in our 20's) and then giggled going "ewww, ewwww, gross". lol Last Edited by WhiteAngel on 02/28/2017 07:35 PM |

Quoting: WhiteAngel I read that giraffes instinctually do not let on when they are about to go in labor. They will act like nothing's going on until they are in active birth. This is so predators are unaware and do not sit and wait to prey while they give birth. The zoo or wherever she's at said to look for hip posturing. I think the birth itself should take 30 min. to an hour once it starts. |

Quoting: bigD111 I knew that one and wondered if it was the same with most animals. She doesn't seem agitated though. Quoting: WhiteAngel The active movement of the calf is a sign that labor is close. Another is that her perineum is swollen. The clue that the birth is imminent is when she begins to pace. That means labor has actively started. To know where your heart is, look where your mind goes when it wanders.
