Anonymous Coward User ID: 31288136 United States 04/28/2017 02:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A M~8.3 Chile earthquake has become more likely Quoting: Spirit~Warrior Since 22 April 2017, an earthquake swarm has been in progress offshore the port city of Valparaíso, which has been widely felt in Chile’s capital, Santiago. This sequence began with a M=6.0, and was followed two days later on 24 April, by a M=6.9 earthquake in the same swarm cluster. What are the implications of the swarm, in light of historical earthquakes in the region, for what may happen next? Geological Disneyland Large mega thrust earthquakes are one of three dramatic consequences of the ‘Nazca’ oceanic plate being shoved under the South American continent at about 80 mm/yr (3 in/yr). The second consequence of this ‘subduction’ is the compression and uplift of the Andes, and the third is the string of Pacific rim volcanoes. The Chilean coastline has suffered repeated great earthquakes over the 500 year or so of its recorded history. The largest earthquake ever recorded, a M=9.5 in 1960, occurred 570 km (350 mi) south of Santiago in southern Chile. So, while coastal Chile is subject to earthquakes, Eastern Chile, along its frontier with Argentina, to eruptions. How big could the next shock be? This week’s seismic swarm struck in the center of a 300-km-long span of the mega thrust hemmed in by two recent great quakes. In 2010, the M=8.8 Maule earthquake ruptured the region to the south, and in 2015, the M=8.3 Illapel earthquake ruptured to the north (Melgar et al., 2016). The last large earthquakes to have occurred within this span were in 1971 (M=7.9) and 1985 (M=8.0), and so 50-60 years have since elapsed. Because the long term subduction, or slip rate on the mega thrust, is about 80 mm/yr, a deficit of roughly 4-5 m of slip has accumulated. If a 300 km x 100 km section of the mega thrust suddenly slipped 4-5 m (12-16 ft), that would yield a M~8.3 shock. That’s roughly equivalent to, or a bit larger than, adding the 1971 and 1985 shocks. [link to temblor.net] Wow this is freaky, not only did the article talk about a 8.3, it also did reference the 2014 quake which I did too. Either they are reading GLP or we came up with the exact same ideas at the same time... -Finland :bump4: |

Aftershocks don't operate that way. They lessen after time and usually occur right away, not with a three day lull period and then produce 17 4+. -Finland |

R.I.P. for the real Wubbo Ockels. He was a true icon of my country, and a great front-fighter for sustainable energie/technology and humanism. My position has been always the same, that these all are foreshocks, from day 1 on 4/23 when the first 5.9 hit. Not a mammoth quake if you mean over 9, but historically these kinds of foreshock sequences have culminated in magnitudes 7.9-8.3. Anything over 7.6 definitely. I'm sure Chileans will ride this out like they did in 2014 and 2015. Hopefully minimal amount of casualties, however the shallow profile and proximity to major cities is concerning. As said in the article, in 1985 8.0 hit Valparaiso so it's capable :/ -Finland |
