Good day everyone. Seems the DDOS attacks are still trickling in, had problems loading the site as I woke up, got coffee and it's back now :) Looks like it's been a quiet day on the EQ front, see one hit Thailand while I was sleeping, hope everyone is okay there..

Ugh, it's terrible. All day yesterday and now today, too. I can get on for a little while sometimes and then I'm booted out for a LONG time, and round and round we go.

I'm sure it's being worked on as best they can.

Hard to keep up with the quake posting though with all of the interruptions. : (

But any who, good morning!

Record Number of Oklahoma Tremors Raises Possibility of Damaging Earthquakes
Released: 5/5/2014 11:30:00 AM

The rate of earthquakes in Oklahoma has increased by about 50 percent since October 2013, significantly increasing the chance for a damaging quake in central Oklahoma.

In a new joint statement by the U.S. Geological Survey and Oklahoma Geological Survey, the agencies reported that 183 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater occurred in Oklahoma from October 2013 through April 14, 2014. This compares with a long-term average from 1978 to 2008 of only two magnitude 3.0 or larger earthquakes per year. As a result of the increased number of small and moderate shocks, the likelihood of future, damaging earthquakes has increased for central and north-central Oklahoma.

I was surprised to see GLP getting ddosed in the first place - I am not sure of its primary source of income (subscriptions, or ads), but it lame indeed. It's either based off a vengance trying to stop GLP From making money, or someone that sure doesn't like free speech..

Heavy metals is what I have worried about. You can boil your water and add a water purifying means (chlorine or iodine) but the heavy metals are still there. I will now be freezing my peels!!! I dehydrate bananas and throw the peels in the compost or trash....not anymore.

Big Earthquakes Come From Old, Strong Faults

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — When forecasting the much-feared "Big One" — the next devastatingly large earthquake — scientists should look to the oldest parts of a dangerous fault, researchers said here today (April 30) at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America.

To pinpoint the earthquake risk from big faults, the kind that slice across hundreds of miles of Earth's crust, researchers examined 2,000 years of historical earthquakes on Turkey's North Anatolian Fault Zone. The largest earthquakes struck on the older, eastern section of the North Anatolian Fault, said lead study author Marco Bohnhoff, a seismologist at the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.

Is Seattle really overdue for an earthquake?

"There's a small plate off the coast of Washington and Oregon that's being pushed under North America. As that plate goes under North America, it melts and erupts at the volcanoes ... We say that plate is kind of locked. It hasn't produced a large earthquake for a long time. That's why people say it's overdue."

Caruso made it clear there is no exact schedule for each earthquake fault. However, he said there's a good chance Seattle will experience a large earthquake.

Very interesting read. I love how the field of seismology is so big; in the sense you could study all your life at University of Alaska about the Pacific\juan de fuca seismology, but the second you start analyzing faults in Turkey, it is a whole nother ballgame (atleast it seems, in a way) because of the varying strata makeup, which makes the data you collect from years of seismicity have to be examined differently from what you may be used to, in terms of activity over a period of time, and how different magnitudes\depths affect different faults.

Though I believe the Christchurch quake in New Zealand was on a new fault, or one the scientists were not aware of.

Scientists are always so sure of what they say until they are proven wrong.
