Anyway, I once worked in an embroidery shop. One day, a dude came in and ordered some jackets with a compass and square design for his Masonic bowling league. I asked him some basic questions, just chit-chatting and so forth. When he came back to pick up the jackets a few days later, he handed me an application and told me if I was interested, to simply fill it out and drop it off at a local lodge. It asked for basic information and three references, and also "why do you want to pursue Freemasonry?"

I filled it out, but never did drop it off.

If you are interested, look in your local newspaper (or online) for "open lodge night" at your local Masonic lodge. I'm sure if you go to one, you can get an application.

I've long known a guy who has been a freemason for over 30 years. I once mentioned all this goobly gobbledy to him and he almost died right there he laughed so hard.

He said they just help people out with money and stuff and that the only requirements to join are that you be a christian (or maybe just believe in God) and that you be of good moral character.

Anyway, I did some research and even spoke to some old Masons. The gist is this: the degrees teach moral lessons using symbolism and allegory. There are only 3 degrees - entered apprentice, fellow craft, and master mason. Any above those, like the 33 in the Scottish Rite system, are honorary titles.

In the US, masonic titles differ slightly between Northern and Southern lodges. Also, black people mostly join Prince Hall lodges, a different Masonic organization. There is still de facto segregation among American masonic lodges, especially in the South. The English lodges use a system called the York Rite, with different names for different degrees.

Basically, your local masons get together as a kind of social club. They do charity events, etc. Once they are master masons, they may join masonic organizations like the Shriners or the Tall Cedars of Lebanon. Eastern Star for the wives, Order of DeMolay for the sons, etc.

Are masons hiding something? Who knows, probably. They are people just like the rest of us. I'm sure some of them do many good things, and I'm sure some of them do bad things. And every variation thereof.

It is pretty much Masonic belief to not publicly defend against criticism of Masonry.

I know in some countries, like Liberia, it was pretty much necessary to be a Prince Hall mason to go anywhere in politics. Some lodges, like the Italian P2 lodge certainly had members that held undue influence over government; that's why such lodges are "disbanded."

The thing that concerns me most, thought, is that I know for FACT, things are being done in this country (the US) in the name of "masonry" that are simply deplorable and would probably cause revolt, if they were known. If I were a mason and I knew people were doing these types of things, I would certainly use any influence I had to stop these deeds and protect my reputation. After all, would any normal person want someone doing evil things in their name?

1.) They are a group of people that have a secret society and they don't want just anyone to be a part of it. They have good men that become members and since they are GOOD men, they help out people that need it. As a side benefit, they know that they can conduct business among themselves and probably won't get burned in any shady deals. You have to have another GOOD man or two vouch for you, and believe in a higher power, to even be an elect.
