Iran guards 'killed in clash' on Pakistan border

The clashes took place on Friday night in a mountainous region outside Saravan, a border town in south-east Iran.

Weird, they're actually pretty tight with each other. There's a lot of drug-trade on the border, could be that or something new.

Roiters -

The area has history of unrest, with the mainly Sunni Muslim population complaining of discrimination at the hands of Iran's Shi'ite Muslim authorities.

Maybe with all the talk of Y'srael looking to pre-emptively strike, the Iranians are getting a little antsy and tried to insert a team to see how vulnerable Pakistans' nukes were?

Sound like they are trying to cut down on the drugs trade, I had heard that they have (like Russia) a nasty problem with drugs, with a little more than suspicion that the West is to blame..

Could be more than that, but going on the type of sentences given to drug traffickers a shoot out would be expected, death or death.. But still could be more than that..

Pakistan looks to Iran to help keep the lights on

Don't forget this little development right in Pakistan's Balochistan province bordering Iran:

Pakistan's Gwadar port may get special 'China' status

In a move that could put a dent in an already fragile relationship between Pakistan and the United States, the Nawaz Sharif government is likely to give a special status to its strategically important Gwadar port similar to that of Hong Kong.

Pakistan has already given operational control and management of Gwadar, a deep-sea port on the Arabian Sea, to a Chinese company.

But a special status to Gwadar
may empower China to control the entire location.

Gwadar Port is located at the apex of the Arabian Sea and at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, approximately 460 km (290 mi) west of Karachi, 75 km (47 mi) east of Pakistan's border with Iran and 380 km (240 mi) km northeast of the nearest point in Oman across the Arabian Sea. It is situated on the eastern bay of a natural hammerhead-shaped Peninsula protruding into the Arabian Sea from the coastline.

Gwadar Port is situated near the strategic Strait of Hormuz and its busy trading and oil shipping lanes. The surrounding region is home to around two-thirds of the world's oil reserves. It is also the nearest warm-water seaport to the landlocked, but energy rich, Central Asian Republics and landlocked Afghanistan.[1

Holy Shiite - that was quick

Iran hangs 16 after deadly Pakistan border clash

Sixteen rebels linked to groups hostile to the regime were hanged this morning in the prison of Zahedan in response to the death of border guards in Saravan," according to Mohammad Marzieh, the attorney general of Sistan-Baluchestan province

[link to au.news.yahoo.com]

Okay - Iran was attacked by an unknown group...It could be anyone
In response, Iran hung the only people who clearly were not involved in the attack (because they were already in prison)

I guess the whole alibi thing isn't big in Iran

From Roiters 5:46 update

"The attackers, who saw that conditions were unsafe for their actions, retreated to (Pakistan) after the clash," Sheikhzadeh said, according to ISNA.

A deputy governor of Saravan, the town near where the clashes occurred, told state television that six border guards were captured by the attackers.

I think this is more about destabilizing Iran than Pakistan. Looks like the Gulf States are trying to open another front in the Shia-Sunni war...

That said, it certainly won't increase foreign investment in the area.

Taking on Shia in their home area and discouraging Chinese investment? To some, that's a win-win scenario
