However this is a 100% possible scenario, IMO... I know ISON will not pass closely enough to Earth for this to happen. Even if the coma explodes and expands after passing the Sun, it would have to be a gigantic expansion to reach Earth. However, other comets, in the future may come close enough. So what would happen to Earth? Would it depend on what gasses make the coma? Let's just say it was the average composition of gasses for comets, average for what we know to exist. Would it block the sunlight, or just filter it? Would the sky be a strange color as it passed by? Would it have any effect on electricity, the power grid, or other? Would there be more lightning from the friction created by the particles in the coma? Would there be fall-out... comet dust fall all over Earth? Do we have any record of this ever happening before? No, you don't. The sky will be orange-ish pink. It may block or amplify sunlight. I'm sure somebody knows what materials are present...unless of course they are unknown materials..... |

Every mineral or substance in the debris field of the comet will heat up as it enters our atmosphere. It will be the luck of the draw as to where it lands.  Fires everywhere. Forests full of bugger-outters engulfed in massive firestorms. The smoke and burned chemicals permeate the air with gases that sicken and kill both men and animals. The cities fare a bit better in the long run as few trees are available for fuel. Houses will burn...but hit and miss. The streets will be covered in broken glass. Some incoming rocks will be tiny...like being hit by machine guns with 22 shells. Some rocks will be huge and take out entire areas...filling the skies with soil and smoke. Much will rise high enough to stay in the atmosphere for weeks or more...making it dark and cold after the fires burn out. That is the comet's coma part...it does not include the destruction from earthquakes and the possible crustal shift... Have a nice day. |
