Offshore Google Barges - Here is Your Clue
Casinos were able to dodge land laws that outlawed gambling by taking their illegal activities off land. So, the question is, what activities might Google be able to conduct off land that would be illegal on U.S. soil?

Databases that house information so sensitive that it would need to be protected by water (think Alcatraz)? Maybe they have the operation on water so it can be sunk if it is about to be compromised?

Only one very big flaw with your 'clue' you have to be more than 3 miles of the coast & that doesn't even guarantee you won't be prosecuted for crimes. Besides its moot, Google is in bed with the FEDS and can prob do anything they want

So what is the reason for taking an operation off land?

Re: Offshore Google Barges - Here is Your Clue
Couple of ideas;

1) Salt water as a coolant, saving about 80% of system cooling costs for one of the biggest data warehouses on the planet.

2) Grounding costs. You know how big of a pain in the ass subbasement infrastructure changes are? Awful.

3) You know where the company is located and how hard it's been bullied to give up all of your information. At sea they can operate as an international company and avoid all the nonsense. Google is doing a good job. They know how to beta products. And most importantly they know how to throw something out that is eating resources.

4) Google is a big company, not only because of the share price and investment. It's also amazingly complex, they sell professional services to help built it now. Again it's a big company.

5) Costs. What does it cost in Silicon Valley to run versus purchasing a barge. I bet there is an extreme cost reduction. Silicon Valley isn't cheap by a long shot...nor is anywhere else.

6) Business continuity. Again you have the opportunity to make sure that all your eggs aren't in one basket. If you live in California on a fault line. Its not such a bad idea.

7) Power generation. They are called powerships. They utilize tidal power to generate into battery systems in the lower part of the ship

8) Fly the Jolly Roger and shout taunts to shore.

So there's seven good reasons to move to sea matey. YARRR!
