MSM: Prep for 30 Days Without Groceries!
[link to www.krextv.com]

Experts say the average person should stock up on non-perishable food and water. Everyone should have at minimum enough supplies to survive for at least 30 days on their own if grocery stores had to shut down.[/i

As I recall, the old MSM recommendations were 3 days. Well, somebody is waking up!

Article is hard to take seriously however...

The 30 day rule is very good, especially for a family with children.

During the Dry Hurricane of 3 years ago, (sustained winds of 70 mph for 10 hours) power was out for many in rural as well as city areas for 3 weeks. Trees and electric lines down across roads and houses everywhere.
And no electricity for gas stations meant no pumping gas. NO electricity at the major malls and stores meant no food or supplies of any sort.
Everyone thought it would be FIXED within the usual one to three days but it was not. Things came back on line unevenly and slowly. The no gasoline was the worst surprise.
30 Days is a reasonable time frame for survival supplies.

There were areas that were without power for over a month.

We lost power in an ice storm for about 2 weeks. This was about 10 years ago. I just remember it being dark and cold the whole time. I was prepared, but still, it wasn't easy.

Why would you not keep enough supplies for 6 monthes? Even if you just set down and look at the things you use and eat everyday?

There are people who do not have a supply of groceries at all.
Many live from day to day - shopping after work for something for dinner.
Maybe for lack of planning, or laziness.
Financially shopping every day ends up costing more.
I do hope people with large families wake up to this 30 day rule.
6 Months is even better.

A lot of people simply cannot afford to shop for 30 days worth of food. I do now and my place stays full and I know my mother does now too. But about a year ago, before we had money, we were completely unable to do it.

Space for storage is my problem, stored food needs 60-70 degrees for best storage, can not put it in the garage.

I hear that.

We lived on a larger island in NC when a hurricane came through and separated us from the rest of the state due to destroyed roads and bridges. No power and empty grocery stores for 24 days. I remember buying dear meat from local hunters and farmers.

If you can grow veggies, you can live on them. If you can live on them, you can also use them for compost to grow more. If you can manage that, you can feed whatever meat source you can find to farm.

Winter would be a challenge. Enough plants and certain facing walls replaced with insulated glass would help. One cabin with a fireplace, given effort, can be made into a terrarium and a sort of little ecosystem for yourself. Recycle your plant water into a kiddie pool of tilapia. Fashion a hand-pump if the jerry-rigged solar panel above looks too complicated.

That's why I think most city-dwellers like me should break their backs until they can afford a chunk of land in the nearest chunk of wilderness and become as self-sufficient as possible while staying technologically connected. We gave up an abundance of self-reliance for an abundance of technology. What we should do is combine the best of both so we give nothing up.

Get vodka. There's more alcohol in it for the same amount of space. It also has more uses than beer.

Keep the old vodka bottles(especially the plastic ones, and use them to store water. Just mark them so you don't ruin a good drink.
