Regarding that CNN article. Ms Lewis is 55, her adult daughters live with her, one is a new mom and another is expecting any day. Her health is not good. Having babies and then sponging off of a sick mother is downright rude. Then the taxpayers have to support the lot of them. She could cut down on eyeliner and knock off the hair color and save a few bucks, I wonder if she's got synthetic nails on as well. I don't wear that much eyeliner in a year! I know some people legitimately need help, but other bring their troubles onto themselves (and we have some situations like this up here, but not as much). They spend money on extras and then complain they can't feed their families. People can't seem to prioritize anymore.

All of the cutting food stamps stories lately have really opened my eyes. I never realized a family of four (adults no less) was getting $800 a month in some places. That is fucking ridiculous. No wonder our country is going to complete shit. I work my ass off everyday so some slack bitch can get $800 a month for just food? And then they complain about getting a few bucks knocked off? Fuck that. Ungrateful pieces of shit is what they are.

Re: Breaking!!! Confirmed FOOD STAMP cuts start today -- Unrest starts - CNN Link
I cant imagine an $800/month food budget, much less how you’d run out before the end of the month. Maybe there is something wrong with me and how I think.......when I had to start cooking for a household, I sat down with paper, pencil, sales ads and did a little planning. There are other resources I used like the free recipe/meal cards at the grocery store, the $2-3 paperback budget meal books at checkout lines, not to mention the zillion cookbooks at the library and at the very least these days you have the internet.
I doubt I spent more than 30 min. or so a week planning, but perhaps I was the only one who went to the store with a list and a plan.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42135420

Nothing wrong with you chica! That's how smart, responsible people budget their money, with emphasis on "their money". I guess when one isn't spending money they earned from the sweat of their labor they are a little more lax.

I am not speaking for everyone on assistance of course but it appears the vast majority have been on the dole for years and are used to getting something for nothing.

I've mentioned that I've been on assistance because I really needed it. God knows I've put a lot of money into the system working for many years so I didn't feel embarrassed or ashamed. But, I was careful and most of all very grateful for the help, I didn't take it lightly.

It is kinda off topic does anyone know very good skillets to use? Not having to scrub all the time to clean for cooking?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49092073

Get an American-made cast iron and take good care of it. It'll last you a lifetime. Do not waste money on the 'non-stick' variety. That coating is poison. If you have a bird in the room when you're heating one of those non=stick pans, it will die. You're getting your pan too hot if all your food is sticking to it so you can't get it off. Also you may be forgetting to preheat it slowly, then add your grease and the food.

In our supermarkets there is usually a shelving unit at the back of the store near the veggies/fruits area, the shelving unit is loaded with fruits/veggies that have a little bruise or mark on them & they sell for half price. When I have been on a tight budget I always check that shelving unit for good buys. Then I use my crockpot to make wonderful homemade soups,
stews, curries, chile & other dishes. Winter is the best season for doing these kinds of dishes. Summer is more difficult because if I buy fresh organic lettuce etc., they are rotten by the end of a week, so its money wasted for me.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46821329

Put that lettuce in your blender if you think it's going to go bad before you have a chance to eat it. With what organic lettuce costs these days, you can't afford to waste any! If you're buying greens like spinach or baby kale for your salads and have the same problem using it up in time, put that in freezer baggies and freeze it in portions. You can then add it straight to your blender for smoothies or to any dish you're cooking.

$ 800 a month can't feed a family of 4 because they don't give half a shit about couponing and buying generic brands and budgeting.

You gotta realize too, in the poorest of poor sections in the cities, grocery stores aren't too close. So you can buy doritos at the supermarket for 3 on sale, maybe 4-5 bucks not on sale, but it's 6+ dollars at the convenient store. Same goes for everything else. Add an additional dollar or two for basics like eggs and milk.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49279114

It's because they steal and rob everything and everyone that there are no supermarkets in the intercity environment.

Every notice how fat some of these people are. I used to work in a supermarket. Lobsters, shrimp, steaks for mom, cheap cereal and hot dogs for the kids.
 Quoting: Dirtyboy

You made a good point a lot of people here are going to ignore completely. 'Poor sections' is a euphemism. Stores don't want to be in black sections of town because the blacks act like animals, trash the place, steal everything in sight and keep all other types of customers away. Nobody wants to get mugged in the parking lot because they had the bad judgment to stop in at a store in the wrong part of town so people who don't already live there, if they're smart, stay the hell out. If all a merchant wants is a 'tax dump' and a business he can run at a loss, having a store in a black area of town will give him what he wants. For the rest, they're getting federal subsidies for operating in 'minority' areas.

I have to run out to the store or I'd bring more in now. I live almost 8,000 ft. up the mountain and it's bloody cold nights and mornings already so I try to pick the middle of the day when I'm thawed a bit. Smoothies are the 'insurance' of my present diet. I went about 80% raw in winter and all raw in summer, in ranch country at least a hundred miles from a health store and I have barely managed it the last few years - but it's worth it, don't get me wrong. What helped was good old youtube and of course, the many threads in the GLP archives that have given me about every good shopping and health link I ever found online. Here are some people to search on youtube to learn about green smoothies:
Victoria Boutenko (Russian lady, all raw family)
David Wolfe
Markus Rothkranz
anything by Hypocrates Health Institute - that was started by Dr. Ann Wigmore and Viktoras Kulvinskas but I forgot the name of the new director they have down South now.
Just putting in 'green smoothies' will open up dozens of good links for you anyhow. The idea is to use whatever you have. To that mix of odds and ends, you add what superfoods you have. I keep things like bee pollen, rosehip powder, alfalfa powder, chlorella, spirulina, probiotics, sea greens, and liquid chlorophyll in the house all the time, ordered in online. They're economical in that I use all those for my dogs and cats' food also. You don't need one of those horribly expensive vitamix blenders, though I hear they're the best. Any you have that'll break up ice for a marguerita will do fine:

Re: Breaking!!! Confirmed FOOD STAMP cuts start today -- Unrest starts - CNN Link
I'm not one to comment on this stuff because.... well-- I'm not. I believe that sometimes people need help to get them though a rough patch. If those people don't have family or church people to get them through then fine. As most people say so often.... JUST FOR A LITTLE BIT OF TIME.

I was behind a woman in the grocery store just 30 minutes ago and her daughter went to school with mine in elementary school. The daughter is now 17.Mom has had at least 5 kids, I know I've "watched" over the years. The daughter was with her in the store (school time, 17 years old) and there was a baby about 18 months in the front of the basket still in his halloween costume because he refused to take it off. ( I heard her telling the checker) I waited for about 20 minutes while they figured out which item went with what for the food stamps/vouchers whatever it is she had. And I felt bad for her.

I felt bad because she has bought in to the belief the government would and should be there to help. I tell you she was the picture perfect for the people that receive these gifts from us. White as most of you disbelieve and very large. Still, I felt sorry for her. Her phone rang she spoke to the other person on the line that she is starting work Tuesday and would not have a day off for 2 weeks. She was at the store for her daughter.

Yes-- it was an iphone.

I still felt sorry for her.

Now, I read this story about a woman who is at home with her 2 grown daughters who can not work because she is ill okay, I'll give her that. Pregnancy or new motherhood is not an illness that can keep one home. My gosh, 4 adults in the home they can share babysitting. FREE!!!!!!

This-- this is when I think we are the lazy ones. We should be banging these people doors down and demanding our money back.

As most of the drama queens and kings here have said: "We are doomed" and I know join the drama world with you.

As Obama has successfully done, he has moved blame of the economy away from the political landscape and moved it closer to blaming it on the system itself in order to remake the system.

Quote “if people can’t trust not only the executive branch but also don’t trust congress and don’t trust federal judges to make sure were abiding by the constitution , due process and rule of law then were going to have some problems here”. said in the speech below

Cloward Piven Strategy

Snip; Whereas the strategy hinges upon putting orchestrated and manufactured crisis into motion, it can be said that it evolved from the teachings of Saul Alinsky

One of the best known Saul Alinsky quotes from Alinsky's Rules for Radicals reads:

"Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system's failure to 'live up' to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist 'rule book' with a socialist one."

[link to www.clowardpivenstrategy.com]

[link to www.youtube.com]

Watch them laugh over this below!!!!

[link to www.youtube.com]

Even better, Churchill was first credited with the quote “never let a good crisis go to waste.” Chew on that for a while in context, remembering one of the very first things the Big O did was remove Churchill’s bust form the Whitehouse. .
 Quoting: Chrit

Going to use the wiki for fun

Snip; Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is the late work of community organizer Saul D. Alinsky, and his last book, published in 1971 shortly before his death. His goal for the Rules for Radicals was to create a guide for future community organizers to use in uniting low-income communities, or “Have-Nots”, in order to empower them to gain social, political, and economic equality by challenging the current agencies that promoted their inequality.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

This next link is just funny.

[link to www.urbandictionary.com]

then...

“Lest we forget at least an over the shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins - or which is which), the very first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom - Lucifer.”
― Saul D. Alinsky, Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals

[link to photos.smugmug.com]
 Quoting: Chrit

this next one is the most important point…

Ever see Hillarie’s thesis on Saul?

Good summary in the link.

Snip; Hillary Clinton's 1969 bachelor's thesis at Wellesley College shows a young women tempted to enter the training program of radical political organizer Saul Alinsky, but choosing the safer route of Yale Law School. The thesis, which was sealed from public inspection while the New York senator was first lady, can now be read by anyone who asks to see it at the Wellesley College archives.

The thesis, entitled "There is only the fight: An analysis of the Alinsky model," was written by a young woman then using the name Hillary D. Rodham. It was submitted as part of an honors program in political science.

[link to web.archive.org]

One more snip but it is a good quick read.

Most importantly the conclusion in 2005 on the Thesis was this; Even a balanced portrayal of Clinton's thesis may not be advantageous for her, because it focuses on the issue of poverty. During the 1960s, this issue was so prominent that even men like Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld focused on it at the Office of Economic Opportunity under President Nixon. In the 2000s, poverty issues have yet to demonstrate vote-getting potential at the ballot box.

well, they cut my "allotment" by $20 - and I am now getting $100 per month for FS ... divide that by the 4 1/2 weeks in a month and that is $22 PER WEEK ... I'd like to see you try and stay healthy on that budget ... $3 a DAY ! If I didn't have the ability to grow my own food - I'd be hurt'n for certain.

Food stamps aren't meant to be your only means for food $. It's a supplement. If you are having to depend upon FS to cover your entire food bill then you have planned poorly. Sorry.

Tks.....in Summer mostly I make smoothies, but have never included the lettuce. Now I will include them as another green veggie. Winter in Canada leaves us craving hot cooked foods, hence my crockpot dishes. I have come to learn to pay attention to what the climate is doing and what my body is asking for & eat accordingly.

So much info now on the web & even in the libraries, that there really is no excuse to eat healthy. Funny thing is that the more healthy we eat, the less food our bodies need.

Not mentioning, and is never mentioned...how much people buy fast food with EBT.

with $800 a month I bet $800 of my own shed never dare publish a monthly "EBT" account statement to show where her egregious amount of cash is going.

$200 a week? I couldnt spend $150 a week on groceries buying top of the line organic brands.
