Regarding that CNN article. Ms Lewis is 55, her adult daughters live with her, one is a new mom and another is expecting any day. Her health is not good. Having babies and then sponging off of a sick mother is downright rude. Then the taxpayers have to support the lot of them. She could cut down on eyeliner and knock off the hair color and save a few bucks, I wonder if she's got synthetic nails on as well. I don't wear that much eyeliner in a year! I know some people legitimately need help, but other bring their troubles onto themselves (and we have some situations like this up here, but not as much). They spend money on extras and then complain they can't feed their families. People can't seem to prioritize anymore.

All of the cutting food stamps stories lately have really opened my eyes. I never realized a family of four (adults no less) was getting $800 a month in some places. That is fucking ridiculous. No wonder our country is going to complete shit. I work my ass off everyday so some slack bitch can get $800 a month for just food? And then they complain about getting a few bucks knocked off? Fuck that. Ungrateful pieces of shit is what they are.

The same gov't that gives all these people free shit can also take it away whenever it deems necessary.

I am not speaking for everyone on assistance of course but it appears the vast majority have been on the dole for years and are used to getting something for nothing.

I've mentioned that I've been on assistance because I really needed it. God knows I've put a lot of money into the system working for many years so I didn't feel embarrassed or ashamed. But, I was careful and most of all very grateful for the help, I didn't take it lightly.

Get an American-made cast iron and take good care of it. It'll last you a lifetime. Do not waste money on the 'non-stick' variety. That coating is poison. If you have a bird in the room when you're heating one of those non=stick pans, it will die. You're getting your pan too hot if all your food is sticking to it so you can't get it off. Also you may be forgetting to preheat it slowly, then add your grease and the food.


Put that lettuce in your blender if you think it's going to go bad before you have a chance to eat it. With what organic lettuce costs these days, you can't afford to waste any! If you're buying greens like spinach or baby kale for your salads and have the same problem using it up in time, put that in freezer baggies and freeze it in portions. You can then add it straight to your blender for smoothies or to any dish you're cooking.


You made a good point a lot of people here are going to ignore completely. 'Poor sections' is a euphemism. Stores don't want to be in black sections of town because the blacks act like animals, trash the place, steal everything in sight and keep all other types of customers away. Nobody wants to get mugged in the parking lot because they had the bad judgment to stop in at a store in the wrong part of town so people who don't already live there, if they're smart, stay the hell out. If all a merchant wants is a 'tax dump' and a business he can run at a loss, having a store in a black area of town will give him what he wants. For the rest, they're getting federal subsidies for operating in 'minority' areas.

I have to run out to the store or I'd bring more in now. I live almost 8,000 ft. up the mountain and it's bloody cold nights and mornings already so I try to pick the middle of the day when I'm thawed a bit. Smoothies are the 'insurance' of my present diet. I went about 80% raw in winter and all raw in summer, in ranch country at least a hundred miles from a health store and I have barely managed it the last few years - but it's worth it, don't get me wrong. What helped was good old youtube and of course, the many threads in the GLP archives that have given me about every good shopping and health link I ever found online. Just putting in 'green smoothies' will open up dozens of good links for you anyhow. The idea is to use whatever you have. To that mix of odds and ends, you add what superfoods you have. I keep things like bee pollen, rosehip powder, alfalfa powder, chlorella, spirulina, probiotics, sea greens, and liquid chlorophyll in the house all the time, ordered in online. They're economical in that I use all those for my dogs and cats' food also. You don't need one of those horribly expensive vitamix blenders, though I hear they're the best. Any you have that'll break up ice for a marguerita will do fine:

I'm not one to comment on this stuff because.... well-- I'm not. I believe that sometimes people need help to get them though a rough patch. If those people don't have family or church people to get them through then fine. As most people say so often.... JUST FOR A LITTLE BIT OF TIME.

I was behind a woman in the grocery store just 30 minutes ago and her daughter went to school with mine in elementary school. The daughter is now 17.Mom has had at least 5 kids, I know I've "watched" over the years. The daughter was with her in the store (school time, 17 years old) and there was a baby about 18 months in the front of the basket still in his halloween costume because he refused to take it off. ( I heard her telling the checker) I waited for about 20 minutes while they figured out which item went with what for the food stamps/vouchers whatever it is she had. And I felt bad for her.

I felt bad because she has bought in to the belief the government would and should be there to help. I tell you she was the picture perfect for the people that receive these gifts from us. White as most of you disbelieve and very large. Still, I felt sorry for her. Her phone rang she spoke to the other person on the line that she is starting work Tuesday and would not have a day off for 2 weeks. She was at the store for her daughter.

Yes-- it was an iphone.

I still felt sorry for her.

Now, I read this story about a woman who is at home with her 2 grown daughters who can not work because she is ill okay, I'll give her that. Pregnancy or new motherhood is not an illness that can keep one home. My gosh, 4 adults in the home they can share babysitting. FREE!!!!!!

Food stamps aren't meant to be your only means for food $. It's a supplement. If you are having to depend upon FS to cover your entire food bill then you have planned poorly. Sorry.

Tks.....in Summer mostly I make smoothies, but have never included the lettuce. Now I will include them as another green veggie. Winter in Canada leaves us craving hot cooked foods, hence my crockpot dishes. I have come to learn to pay attention to what the climate is doing and what my body is asking for & eat accordingly.

So much info now on the web & even in the libraries, that there really is no excuse to eat healthy. Funny thing is that the more healthy we eat, the less food our bodies need.
