11/11/13 Update: Oklahoma Quake Swarm "Geological Survey Stumped"

Thanks for the suggestions Tangy. Personally we don't have gas so that is one less worry. One thing I have done is change how we store our water. I got to thinking that in a large quake of even a tornado for that matter that the area where we've always kept our water supplies could become inaccessible so we've split up the supply to multiple locations likely to still be standing.

I have lots of tall furniture and need to get busy strapping it.

I have added earthquake insurance to my policy though.

Slightly less scientific than I was expecting. lol

A quicky search does show sinkholes in the area over the years, mostly caused by weather.

I didn't realize how many gas fields were around there.

Yes, that's why we had to take it back from the Indians.

It's pretty clear that withdrawal of oil & gas has a lot to do with subsidence and sinkholes in Louisiana, can Oklahoma be far behind?

Good thinking! I keep a case of 6 gallons in each car too. Lucky about the no gas. Hopefully that means fires would be less likely than they are here in Cali following a large quake.

An axe and large pry bar might be a good addition to your EQ kit.

Hopefully all of this is releasing pressure so you avoid a large quake. :)

All Shook Up: Another Quake Rumbles Near Edmond

"EDMOND, Oklahoma -
The Earth under central Oklahoma continues to move as another earthquake rattled residents in Edmond, Sunday evening.

The quake weighed in at a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter Scale, according to a report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)."

RE: Global Incident Map While somewhat informative, absolutely ignores some areas. Have complained about this for years.

Don't know what is up with the Oklausgs site [link to www.okgeosurvey1.gov] Since their supposed 'computer failure' (about the same time as the USGS maps changed), it has been pretty crappy. Before that, it was one of the best sites.

I now goto [link to folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu] this map for local info. Not as good as Leonard used to be, but definitely better than the 'new and disgusting' USGS site

My mom moved from Ca to get away from the quakes and today she was at the epicenter in Edmound. She knows what one feels like and she dove for the triangle of life.

I've noticed this as well. They seem to pick and choose what they report.

Thanks for the link. The map seems to be more comprehensive than the others I watch. I've added to my favorites.

Funny, my mom's from Cali as well. She thought all she'd have to contend with here were tornadoes. Surprise!

I felt this one. Made sort of a pop then a rumbling sound. More of a rolling feeling than a shaking.

Glad to see a thread about this, woke up and checked my quake app, lots of shaking in Oklahoma last 12 hours, I definitely noticed...

I live in MO, anytime New Madrid is shaking I take notice...

Tangy, I'm betting that nothing will come of all these rumblings. Well maybe not betting but at least really, really hoping.

The ground is still shaking here every day. People are starting to ask why. This is a report from our local news. I don't know that I'm buying that oil and gas drilling have nothing to do with this.

Another note, everyone I speak to locally is saying that they are feeling strong quakes that neither the USGS or the OGS are reporting. I seems that if the eq was strong enough to be felt then it should be recorded by the USGS and OGS. Makes one wonder why the people charged with documenting these events are failing to do so.

I wanna know how many and of what intensity and who felt what where!

I think you can still see all of that. You just have to play with the settings.

Use the gear in the upper right. Select show all magnitudes.. 1 day, 7 days.. and other settings if you want.

Then click a quake, and on the lower left there is a clickable link. That page has the Did you feel it.. etc..

Thanks for the info Tangy. I'm going to try it right now.

I tried what you suggested. Used the setting for 7 days, all magnitudes. USGS only listed 21 quakes during this time frame. We know from other sources that there have been at least 95 documented and I suspect more that are not being reported.

I really want be confident that there was no cover up. I really, really do. I'm beginning to wonder though. The numbers just don't add up.
