A treasure trove of artworks worth almost £1billion seized by the Nazis and reportedly destroyed in RAF bombing raids during WW2 has been found behind rotting food in shabby apartment in Munich.

Experts have hailed the discovery of the 1,500 pictures, thought to have been lost or bombed, as a sensational find.

The story of the lost masterpieces of such painters as Pablo Picasso, Renoir, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall is revealed in this week's edition of Germany's Focus magazine which broke the story of the incredible find by customs officials.

Interesting...

Happened in 2011, and they have been looking for the rightful owners for 2 years...

I will never understand how someone can pay millions for a book or a picture.
It's totally rediculous.
We should not care about the junk from already rotten corpses.
Redicule, redicule, redicule.

What if it was a diary of a very important historical character that could shed some truth in a shady historical matter, don't you think such kind of a book would be worth a fortune?

As far as I know any book that is worth a very large sum are rare books with hundreds sometimes thousands of years.

Some of the works were declared as degenerate by the Nazis, while others were stolen from or forcibly sold for a pittance by Jewish art collectors.
If confirmed, it would be one of the largest recoveries of looted art.

The Nazis categorised almost all modern art as "degenerate". It was banned for being un-German or for being the work of Jewish artists

Paul Rosenberg, an art dealer who represented Picasso as well as Matisse, was forced to leave his collection behind when he fled Germany in the 1930s.
The US Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates the Nazis seized about 16,000 works of art in all.

Hitler had grand plans to build the largest art museum and library in the world. The "bad" art was Jewish and modern. That's why most of it wasn't destroyed.

Great find OP!!

you dont need to understand it, only accept that people are willing to pay millions for it, even if you personally are not.
