Because Maliki is asking for US help, like the green zone citadel listening post will help him kill US mercenaries.

The leader of al-Qaeda has ordered the re-organization of jihadist efforts in Syria and Iraq by abolishing the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and giving the Nusra Front sole responsibility for activities in war-torn Syria.

I was thinking it had more to do with Syria than Iraq...but you could be on to something...
