Is it possible that there are friendly handlers?
Who know of the dangers surrounding their subject and steer them around those dangers?

The simplest way to look at it is, a handlers job is to control you for the benefit of something other than your own well being, while they tell you it's for your own good and for your benefit. A bold face lie obviously.
A guide will definitely not hesitate to stop you from making a decision that will ruin you. That being said, anything negative a guide does would be a temporary setback and not something designed to hurt/scar you permanently as a handler would do.
So, you have to ask yourself, is this person you are considering to be guide capable of putting the boot to you so hard that it would hurt you permanently? Would they really do that to you, do they
threaten to do that to you repeatedly as a way to push you in the direction they want?
If the answer is yes then they are no guide. This is a complicated question and one you have to answer for yourself
because while a guide will not cripple you in any way like a handler will they can be very assertive to some people.
You have to make sure your anger towards them is really valid and not just butt hurt.
