With almost daily mauling of kids, strangers, owners and other dogs, I have to assume them to be a dangerous breed. These are just the ones we hear about.

Actually, pit bulls are bred only to kill other pit bulls. Normally, they will not attack humans. Ever. These are a result of ghetto hood rat breeding and idiot owners.

This isn't exactly that far from the truth. You can have temperamental issues that ARE genetic...so in some cases, even when the dog is raised right, something else is going on. Of course, scumbag owners don't help either.

And yet they attack people on a daily basis and kill more people than any other breed.

But, I am sure this dog was a loving family pet that never showed any sign of aggression. Until he bit her arm off, that is.

Wish I could believe that, but I don't think that a dog or any other pet has the logical thinking process you are speaking of.

It's not logical, it's instinct. They are (or were) bred for obedience. The handlers would have to enter the pit with the dogs and not get ripped to pieces. Any dog that showed aggression to a human was killed.

And pit bulls are not even near the top of the list of dog attacks. It's just that their jaws are so strong that they cause more damage than when most other breeds attack.

I have read this as well, but breeds change and evolve over time depending on what people focus on (if anything). It seems like that isn't the case now with a lot of "pit bull" lines.

I can agree with that. I think most people should not own pit bulls. They are a good breed, but they require work, so they are not the same as owning a lap dog breed.

Yeah, I think the problem is that a lot of pit bulls are bred by ghetto hood rats because they want a tough dog, so the breeding standards are really lax today. You have to know where the dog came from and know how to pick out which are genetically correct and which are broken.

Well, that's it...because I'll tell you, with German Shepherds, there is a lot of variance among the lines. But, the thing is...these people adopting those 8 week old "pit bull" pups out of unknown dogs won't know which are genetically stable, and in at least a few cases I've heard the dogs "snap" at 3, 4, 5 years of age.
