***This*** we do the same thing. When pushed at former employment, I did the Christmas stuff for the tots that went to the local kids...put the present under the tree...but everything else (cash) my reply was No, I have my own favorite charities. My feeling was: I already gave to charity, I paid taxes---lots of taxes. How much of that is redistributed to help those in need? And now you want more? I have a family to feed/cloth/vet too.
