my friend needs help - in Philippines- building latrine advice.....please help
my friend went to the Philippines to help and here is what he wrote me.........
I'm on the ground here in the philippines and it is BAD - way worse then Haiti. It pains my heart and there is SO MUCH need. Someone summed It up best by saying "what do they need - EVERYTHING"

"Tacloban Philippines update straight from Eli. City is secure and safe. We got here and found only 1 of 5 hospitals was running the rest were "permanently destroyed and not working". The congressman was impressed with us and have us a shot with his "destoyed" hospital that is 140,000 sq ft. we have the operating room open and running and about 50,000 sq ft of thehospital operation already after 33 hours. Go team AWESOME! This afternoon the congressman was so impressed with our work that he gave us control of the university next door that is at least as big as this hospital. It will be tuned into a refugee camp and distribution center tomorrow. It's expensive running a house imagine a huge hospital and a college. The Clorox alone we need is hundreds of dollars. The brooms the mops the labor the...the...the... We need money probably $10,000 to get this job done."

Urgent need!!! I need to build a Latrine big enough to support the continual needs of 400 people construction starts in 3 hours! I've never built one an need YOU to research best practices when the water table is 1 ft below ground (digging a hole is NOT an option). Most latrines are below ground. Mine WILL be above ground I just need to know what differences this makes so I can build properly. I'm going to find a huge tank like object or make one that I know. Please TEXT me answers because sun rises in 2 hours and I WON'T HAVE internet text me at 8********. Make it short sweet and to the point"

i will relay the message! please help!

The buildings are big enough that existing sewer lines should already exist. You just need access to the pipes where the toilets used to be. You can use a crude funnel type device atached to chairs with holes cut in the seats for obvious reasons. One golden rule to remember Sheeeet rolls down hill...don't access the bottom of the sewer pipe and expect it to defy gravity. bleach and water mix to "flush the system " will need to be done regularly to avoid a disease situation

Make an empty space, not to big, on the first floor.
There has to be a large exit to the outside.
Cover the floor with the sailcloth of an abandoned truck.
Connect some ropes to it, so you can pull it outside afterwards.
Now put a 5 cm layer of soil on it.

The room above will be your latrine, cut some holes in the floor.
Spread some quick lime through the holes, several times a day

Good luck.

Tell your friend that disease could be a real problem soon.
I have the Sodium Chlorite in granule form that is used to make MMS, which cures malaria, and others.
But he would need distilled water to mix it, and then activate it with lemon juice.
If he can overcome that, the amount of MMS would enough to cure the 400.
Need him to figure out if the mail is reliable, and then an address.
Checking back later........

As long as the system doesn't back up and is kept flushed / cleaned . yes it will work

easy test on a sewer pipe is pour about 20 or 30 gallons of water down it and see what happens and wich way it flows. should be plenty of sea water available to do this test

Wont work, stated in the original post was, the water was one feet below ground table. So all the sewers are filled with water and debris.

All those pipes do is lead directly to the sewer so there is no issue with it. The issue is getting a water supply to flush the solid waste down...with a basic electric pump you can solve this and solar power it.

Doesn't have to be fancy it just has to work here.

Re: my friend needs help - in Philippines- building latrine advice.....please help
In emergency settlements such as refugee camps, sanitation is a first priority. Simple
defecation trenches and pit toilets can be made quickly using local materials. One
trench or pit toilet for each family, or for a small group of families, will allow for the
most comfortable use.
Sanitation trenches and pit toilets should be built downhill and away from water
sources, but close enough to family settlements that people do not have to walk long
distances to use them.
This shallow trench latrine is easier to dig than a pit toilet or a deep trench. It has
shelves for the feet to make it easier to use than a simple trench. The trench is about
30 centimeters deep. Each user covers his or her feces with
a small amount of soil. A portable shelter can be built to
give privacy and to protect users from rain. Special care
should be taken to assure women’s privacy and safety.
When it is full, cover the trench completely with
soil. Plants and trees will benefit from the rich soil.

im just pasting extracts from survival manuals and such, for what its worth.

Human waste is the one area we must exercise extreme care, both in recognition of the septic system limitations
and the spread of disease. It is permissible and recommended that both “liquid and solid” waste be done in a
prepared latrine and not into the septic system . . . the exception would be small children, very bad weather and
illness of an individual. Latrines will be prepared on the two joining properties on the circle; these will be “pit
type” latrines with shelters built over them (we will explore the purchase of a used “port-a-potty” which we can
remove the bottom from and retain the enclosure). We will have to “move” these around the area as they fill,
but space is not an issue. To keep the “pits” from becoming a health hazard each “user” will have to place a
shovel full of dirt in the pit after each use. It would be helpful, but not required, to have “lime” available for
odor control . . . that will be something for us to plan for as a bulk purchase.

Pour concrete over area surrounding latrine and lavatories to seal off

void applying lime to areas around latrines. since lime has a tendency to
asten maggot penetration (into the soil) and pupae development. The best
method is mobilizing the masses during winter or spring to dig for the pupae,
eal off or flood areas around the latrines, to flush out and kill the pupae.

Re: my friend needs help - in Philippines- building latrine advice.....please help
Flies are the vectors of typhoid, dysentery, gastroenteritis, infec-
tious hepatitis and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Maturation
of the fly is divided into four stages:. larva, maggot, pupa, and adult fly.
Development from larva to adult fly generally takes 1 to 2 weeks, so it propa-
gates and multiplies rapidly. Coordination of patriotic health movement ac-
tivities in the winter and spring by digging up pupae and eliminating flies,
the annual density of the fly population is curtailed.
1. Eliminating the fly breeding grounds
Flies like to lay their larvae on odiferous matter such as feces, gar-
bage, rot, feed,,sugar mash etc., which are smelly, fragrant, sweet, or fishy.
Sanitary management of places containing such matter is a must -- outhouses
and cesspools must be kept clean at all time,s, It is best to keep lids on
excreta crocks, fencing around stables and barns, and cages for chickens and
ducks. People should not live under the same roof with domestic animals.
Someone must be assigned the duties of sweeping and cleaning these areas
regularly in connection with the goal of the Patriotic Health Movement to
improve on compost-making and environmental sanitation.
2. To eliminate maggots
(1) Cover layers of compost piled over the maggots with dirt in
sufficient amounts to seal them in and kill them.
(2) Pour cow manure into the latrine.
(3) Retrieve the maggots and feed them to ducks. Pouring boiling
water and emptying hot ashes over the maggots is also an effec-
tive method,
(4) Use traditional Chinese medicinal herbs.
(a) Crush whole plants of stargrass (Aletris spicata) or
Clerodendron bungei (ch'ou mu-tan) and throw into excreta
crock.
(b) Mix and crush plants of groundsel chui-li-kuang (Senecio
scandens), Japanese pepper, and plume poppy (Macleaya
cordata), and pour into waste water or latrine.
(c) Use a 5% extract of tea-seed bricks (compressed residue
of tea seeds after oil has been extracted) or add 2-4
liang of the tea-seed brick into the latrine or cesspool
and stir for maximum effectiveness in killing maggots and
larvae.
If possible, sprinkle 6% wettable 666 powder or 5% Ti-
pai-ch'ung into the excreta crock.
- 41 - 3. To eliminate pupae
Pour concrete over area surrounding latrine and lavatories to seal off
racks and prevent maggots from entering the soil to be transformed into pupae.
void applying lime to areas around latrines. since lime has a tendency to
asten maggot penetration (into the soil) and pupae development. The best
ethod is mobilizing the masses during winter or spring to dig for the pupae,
eal off or flood areas around the latrines, to flush out and kill the pupae.
4. To eliminate adult flies
(1) Swat: Use fly swat, or attract flies with fragrant odiferous
substance first before swatting.
(2) Bait-kill:
(a) Crush tobacco leaves and add to rice gruel or congee
which will bait and kill flies.
(b) Cut up leaves of oleander, add as bait to food.
(c) [not printed on xeroxed copy]
. (d) Prepare a 10% solutioll of Ti-pai-ch'ung or 0.1% DDT, add
to gruel, soup stock, rotten fruits or vegetables and
mix for use as bait.
(3) Spray with insecticides:
(a) Crush leaves of the castor plant, dilute the extracted
juice and use as spray. Or make up a solution of pyrethrum
for the same purpose.
(b) To 10 ml of 80% DDT, add water to make 8000 ml of solu-
tion, which is then sprayed over fly breeding areas.
(4) Smoke-out: A good method for killing wintering-over flies.
(a) Burn duckweed for smoke (food and clothes should be stored
elsewhere during the smoking operation).
(b) . Burn crushed leaves of huang-thing [chenopodium?],
artemesia, and red duckweed to which realgar (spirits
of sulfur) is added.

Simple, find an old gas tanker/septic cleaner/water tank truck, a water pump, some solar panels to power aid pump.. Attach some sort of makeshift shitter to the pipe, pump to the pipe, pipe to the tank... Pump and dump!
