It was hypothesized that domestic cat (Felis catus) or cougar (Felis concolor) faeces contaminated a surface water reservoir with Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. An extensive investigation of the Victoria watershed 1 year following the outbreak documented the presence of an endemic T. gondii cycle involving the animals inhabiting the area.

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Turkish River and Drinking Water Samples by Different PCR and LAMP Methods
We investigated the occurence of Toxoplasma gondii and checked the sequencing in 56 samples collected from in the Ordu province, Middle Black Sea, Turkey.
The conventional PCR and nested PCR confirmed that 12 and 16 out of 56 samples (21.42 and 28.57%) were positive for Toxoplasma, respectively.

"Toxoplasma gondii is the most successful protozoan pathogen on the planet," says Michael Grigg of the US National Institutes of Health. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly one in four people aged 12 or older in the US have been infected with the parasite.
It is the third leading cause of death by food poisoning, and can even cause encephalitis - an acute and potentially deadly inflammation of the brain.
Cats are the primary reservoir: they catch the parasite from eating infected mice or birds.
T. gondii has been found in marine mammals around the world, from seals and sea-otters to walruses and dolphins. Beluga whales have been found dead from encephalitis thought to be caused by the parasite.
Some have suggested that the eggs get into the oceans through sewage, and lab studies have shown that they can accumulate in mussels and oysters.

An atypical genotype of Toxoplasma gondii as a cause of mortality in Hector's dolphins

Hector's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus hectori) are a small endangered coastal species that are endemic to New Zealand.
This study investigates Toxoplasma gondii infection in Hector's dolphins, finding that 7 of 28 (25%) dolphins examined died due to disseminated toxoplasmosis, including 2 of 3 Maui's dolphins, a critically endangered sub-species.

Deadly cat feces killing thousands of marine mammals
A disturbing trend was found in a six-year study that monitored marine mammals in the Pacific Northwest. More than 5,000 dead marine mammals (dolphins, porpoises, sea otters, seals, sea lions and three species of whale) were observed, many of them suffering from encephalitis (brain swelling) long associated with Toxoplasma gondii, a single-celled parasite. The study was published by the National Institutes of Health in 2011.
"Chlorination does not kill T. gondii, but filtration eliminates them from the water supply," notes Dr. Michael Grigg, lead researcher of the study.
