There's something in what Duncan is saying.

I'm in NY and I have a kid who is really really good in school. I know this because I was really good and he's better than I was. Much better in English.

He was having trouble with the old NY state ELA (English Language Arts) tests because he couldn't figure out what the question wanted. He was getting scores of 3 (above grade level) but not 4 (distinguished.)

The new CC compliant test is longer and harder, but it's clear what is asked. Now he's scoring well up in the 4 range, as the districts's scores have fallen.

I really don't know what they were testing before, but it's not the stuff that served me well all the way thru school. Now it's more familiar to this old guy, WITH CC.

The truth in this comment is staggering. I am 26 years old, very young but in the brief time I have been out of lower education it seems to have changed drastically. My fiancee's 18 year old cousin is dumb as a box of rocks, thinks he's smart as all get out, no ambition to ever leave home or continue school and works part time and complains about it because he can't play on his playstation.

He's a welfare recipient in waiting and it drives me up a wall!

With schools getting worse and worse at actually teaching anything but propaganda parents must pick up the ball. But when the parents are brainless morons there is no one left to help the child. Commence eternal cycle of dependents.

Off topic. Neither test, as far as I know, was about figuring out abstract ideas. But from my impression of what my son said, the CC test was a bit more about that than the old one which was totally lame.

And by the way, my son would be able to do a lot of those Kansas questions as I remember. Some of the words he might have to google, but much of it he could figure out. You're not bursting anyone's bubble, I have a good idea what intelligence is.

It is possible to make a truly difficult multiple choice test. There was once a True-False exam in a graduate math course at MIT. The scoring was 1 for a correct answer, -1 for a wrong answer, 0 for no answer. You could get a zero by answering no questions, guaranteed.

The class average was NEGATIVE. And these were grad students in the MIT math department.

I'd venture a guess that Common Core, like most of the Amurkin deaducation system, is there to teach kids to take tests.

I'm not sure what the value of learning to take tests is. Then again, school is for control freaks. Twenty years at a desk to prepare you for forty years at a desk. And all of those lovely ruuuules to follow!

Actually white mothers (and any other mother who loves their children) are learning is that Common Core is not teaching their children the skills needed to become productive human beings.

When your child brings home a math test with a shiny star and "Great JOB!" hand written on the top of the page by the teacher and you start reading that test and realize that your kid had five or six wrong answers out of ten problems...You had better be asking, "Why the star," and why the, "Good job!"?

The child has NOT learned anything and the star tells him he doesn't have to...the teacher doesn't care so someone must...
