Re: How Do You Make Coffee? Percolator, Auto Drip, or French Press?
Shamefully, I now use the Folgers single coffee bags. I only drink about one cup a day.

This thread reminds me of my mom and grandmother and how they would have a pot of coffee brewing through an old Corning-ware percolator all day long. I can still remember the wonderful aroma!

Thanks for the thread, Lisa*Lisa!

Re: How Do You Make Coffee? Percolator, Auto Drip, or French Press?
I just bought a vintage percolator, and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Steaming hot coffee every morning.

What do you use to make your coffee? I'm tempted to buy a french press and try that out.
 Quoting: Lisa*Lisa

Percolators continuously boils and reboils your coffee, giving it a terrible burned flavor. Their only use is if you're in the woods and all you have is a campfire. The coffee is inconsistent at best and hot mud at worst.

I use a DeLonghi drip machine. I've had it a couple months and so far, it's great. I get single-source beans... currently, ones from Costa Rica... grind them fresh for each pot, and then use generic spring water from the grocery store. The coffee is delicious. There's lots of good coffee makers out there, and this one was around $60. For me, the sweet spot between quality and economical. Krups and Bunn are other good brands.

Lisa*Lisa,

I use none of the above.

Try a "Toddy" cold brew system.

It produces a strong coffee concentrate liquid. Due to the nature of cold brewing, little of the inherent acid in the coffee is released.

This makes for a pleasant tasty cup of coffee that is highly caffeinated without the acid.

Check Amazon or the Toddy website for specifics and prices.

Best,

I tried that method once, but it never extracted enough caffeine for my taste. It was like drinking decaf. Now I use one of those home espresso/cappuccino makers that Starbucks used to sell.

I read on the amazon reviews that you can do the cold brew method using a mason jar, coffee and water. Shake it up and put it in the fridge for 24 hours. Some say strain it, some say leave the grounds in the jar......and it lasts 2 weeks, like a coffee syrup and you add water.

Not my cup of tea, but to each his own I guess......

Got a French press a few months ago and I will NEVER GO BACK! It makes the best coffee, no contest. It is a little more trouble to use and wash, but for me entirely worth it. It's the best coffee of my coffee-obsessed life (64 years).

A french press is a good alternative to a drip coffee maker. The real key is getting the timing right, then pouring the coffee out of the press and into an insulated carafe.

If it doesn't work, you can get the same effect using this method:

1) Boil 6 cups of water.
2) Pour over bowl containing 12 Folgers single serve instant coffee tea bag things
3) Allow to sit for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
4) Remove instant coffee bags
5) Pour bowl into sauce pan and bring to boil
6) Boil down to about 4 cups

That should closely replicate the terrible, burned taste from a percolator. If you don't want to wait for all that, you can mix used motor oil with mud, and then microwave it.

I had a French press
I don't know watthfck happened to it
And I have been pissed-off ever since, when I think about it

made awesome fresh tasting full flavored coffee
I was making them a little too strong though
and I should have been using a more course grind
or grinding my own which was beyond me at the time
because there was tiny bits of the grinds getting through
which was slightly annoying
I stopped using it for some reason or another
and it disappearededed on me
either someone broke it and threw away the evidence (I never wrang a confession out of anyone)
It got given away to someone and I was deceived into thinking that it had become lost
or the most plauseable being that it is no longer my possession because I missed the timeline shift, and failed to ascend, so some other higher version of me is still happily making coffees with it in an alternate reality

oh I forgot to mention that the French press version I had, tended to make the coffee cooler than I preferred after all the playing around with the water

I should have been pouring some hot water into it first to heat the glass and some boiling water into my cup to heat that up, would have solved it, though I didn't know that at the time,
It's what the mother used to do with her teapot before steeping a cup of tea, she said it bade a better tasting cup of tea
