Re: How Do You Make Coffee? Percolator, Auto Drip, or French Press?
I'm still in search of the perfect, EASY, coffee maker... I'm currently using the Keurig since we only drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day in our house, but it isn't perfect. All depends on the coffee you use and doesn't seem to make a strong, full bodied cup. Can be bitter at times. I've also used a coffee press, but frankly it's too much work and I haven't discovered a way to keep it warm while one drinks a cup. I've tried Cuisenart coffee maker and many others. Acknowledge you have to start with good beans to make a good cup of coffee. I've used fresh ground beans at home, grind at store and have bought preground. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Still searching ......

Anyone tried this new one from Remington?

I have used a French press only for years.

Super easy, no need for filters, and great taste! I bottle it in a thermos so it stays warm until I need more.

French press!

I grind my beans (kept in an airtight stainless steel canister) fresh for every pot.

Then I heat my water to boiling in a teak kettle.

Then I put the grounds in the French press and pour the cooling water 9just under 212 degrees) over them, and then wait 4 minutes to press.

When the power was out for a couple of days two years ago, I used my mortar & pestle to smash up my beans :-) I have a gas stove, so the rest of it worked just as designed. TEOTWAWKI proof :-P

You don't know coffee until you've brewed it in a Kevlar Helmet in the dead of winter on a tank engine.

That's how I do it.

If you do not do it that way, you have inferior coffee.

If I have a lot of time available (weekends) I fire up my pavoni professional for a couple of shots.

Weekday shots are pushed through my jura super automatic because its too easy.

If I am traveling for work I bring my aeropress.

I've gifted moka pots to all my relatives that I visit to ensure a reasonable cup away from home.

Just finished roasting 1lb of microlot Brazilian cachoeira which is my favorite bean at the moment.

I know I am a coffeTard but whatever, I love the stuff!

If you want to up the quality of your cup make sure to source fresh roasted beans - the quality deteriorates rapidly and I can guarantee those grocery store beans are long past their prime.

Next source a high quality burr grinder - its all about a consistent grind!

Oh, and I've used distilled water for years and years...getting the most out of the beans without tap taint.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43269122

I don't know about the quality of your tap water, but ours is excellent.

But sometimes the end result from brewing with tapwater can be greatly improved if you let it breathe for a while, or boil it once, to get rid of the flouride.

After my Bodum carafe got cracked, I got an OXO press -- it is mostly covered in stainless teel, so the coffee stays hot a lot longer.

Also, I find that the ritual of making my coffee & then sitting on my patio outweighs the inconvenience -- anything worth doing is worth doing right :-)

Kind of like a Japanese Tea ceremony, but different, hehe.

I have a commercial grade espresso machine that's even better than the one used at Starbucks. My espresso blend is also better than Starbucks but then again it has been passed down for generations.

The only problem with my machine is that it takes me about an hour per week to clean it. These machines need to be kept very clean to maintain the integrity of that pure coffee taste

I use a French press but with all the raves about a percolator im going to have to get one.

Also I just found a recipe im going to try today. Here it is:

Not my recipe I found it inline

Ingredients
•1 cup of organic coffee, herbal coffee or chai tea
•1 tablespoon coconut oil (or more, I usually put in 2-3 tablespoons)
•1 teaspoon organic grassfed unsalted butter (I get it here)
•¼ tsp vanilla
•a few drops of stevia extract (optional)

Instructions
1.Put all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Mix on high speed for 20 seconds until frothy. Drink immediately and enjoy all the energy!

I have one of these, a 3 cup Bialetti I bought in Italy still almost like new as I rarely get to use it.

[link to www.bialetti.com]

It makes the world's best coffee only that I prefer drinking tea, Indian teas, always tea leaves, mostly Darjeeling or Assam, occasionally Ceylon teas

but I must say a fresh brew from fresh ground coffee is a real treat - followed by a home made dark chocolate truffle is even nicer.

That's indicative of a poor coffeemaker.

A regular coffemaker isn't rocketscience, and it does not need to be expensive to make good coffee. The single most important factor is heat.

The water, when it hits the filter with the coffe, must be ATLEAST 92 degrees celsius or 197.6 degrees fahrenheit.

If less, the coffee will not be very good...

And that's why you guys manage to get such good results with the french press.

This is the OXO I currently have. I took the 'grounds strainer' out and ditched it. I use it like a traditional press. The stainless steel holder helps keep it warmer longer.

For those of you who have never used a French press, you can even make canned coffee from Aldi's edible by using one. And that means that really GOOD coffee tastes even more amazing. Since trying French press about 4 years ago, I have never gone back. The only reason I still have a drip maker is for when my folks come to visit -- my mom prefers her coffee like colored water, hehehe.

I also, bought a percolator at a vintage second hand store. I will never go back to a drip. My Farberware Superfast makes great coffee no matter what kind of coffee I put in it.....upscale or store brand. And, it is super fast. It is no more trouble than a drip to set up or clean. Never much liked my French press coffee, so great idea to use it for making tea! Oh no, now I am worried my pot might become non-functional. I pray that doesn't happen anytime soon LOL
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13501552

You like boiled coffee. The percolator boils it. Other methods, like drip or french press or even espresso, are a little below boiling.

It's all what you like in the taste. Some people don't like the boiled taste. If you like it, go for it!

I have an espresso machine and a french press. If you make your own espresso, you MUST get a burr grinder. Costco sells one for like $30, but you have to modify that to got fine enough for espresso. Or you can get one like a Bodum for $100 that you don't have to modify. If you don't grind it yourself right before making the coffee, the coffee will taste terrible and you'll wonder why. It is that important, with espresso.

I also have a french press, but I got a cheap plastic one and I think I taste the plastic in the coffee, so I just make espresso.

I bought an electric perc at a second hand store about three years ago. I have never had such great coffee. I use to use a camping perc on the stove, before I got my french press. Now french press is just for tea.

Perc is the way to go if you are serious about your coffee ;-)
 Quoting: Ozark Woman

What kind of perc did you get?
 Quoting: Lisa*Lisa

Nothing special. Just an old perc that reminds me of what my mom had in the 60's. At 6 am it is 9 cups of water to 4 tablespoons of Kirkland and I am good to go feed that animals!

I put it in my thermos and can have a hot, fresh cup at 2 PM.

I still have the same KRUPS electric grinder from 1994. It still is amazing and consistent. My parents have gone through 3 grinders in the space of time that I have owned my KRUPS. I don't think the 'new' ones are anywhere as good quality or consistent. At the time I bought it, I paid about $20 for it... what is that in today's dollars? $50?

I like variation, but espresso is probably the method that is the hardest to get right.

Not only is it important to grind the beans more or less immediately before making it, the equipment must be topnotch aswell. Atleast 15 bar pressure through the coffee, and the water must be hot enough...

Auto drip

prefer percolator. Used to wake to the smell of my Grandmother percolating the morning coffee & frying bacon.
 Quoting: Lady Jane Smith

Oh yes this is the best memory, my grandmother then fried the eggs in the bacon grease.

And she'd have cream in her percolated coffee and make me hot chocolate with real heavy cream.

I use heavy cream in my coffee today.

I still fry eggs in bacon fat.........nothing wrong with that!
