You go on eBay and get yourself and old norelco dial a brew. While most coffee markets these days use 400 or so volts the vintage norelco auto drips use 1250 to 1500 watts. To get your coffee that hot now you would have to buy an expensive high end unit. The 1500 watt ones are Perfect for Chemex use.

I think the older methods, in some cases, are better then modern ones.....like percolators.

And my cast iron cookware.......that stuff will outlive me!

Re: How Do You Make Coffee? Percolator, Auto Drip, or French Press?
I also, bought a percolator at a vintage second hand store. I will never go back to a drip. My Farberware Superfast makes great coffee no matter what kind of coffee I put in it.....upscale or store brand. And, it is super fast. It is no more trouble than a drip to set up or clean. Never much liked my French press coffee, so great idea to use it for making tea! Oh no, now I am worried my pot might become non-functional. I pray that doesn't happen anytime soon LOL
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13501552

You like boiled coffee. The percolator boils it. Other methods, like drip or french press or even espresso, are a little below boiling.

It's all what you like in the taste. Some people don't like the boiled taste. If you like it, go for it!

I have an espresso machine and a french press. If you make your own espresso, you MUST get a burr grinder. Costco sells one for like $30, but you have to modify that to got fine enough for espresso. Or you can get one like a Bodum for $100 that you don't have to modify. If you don't grind it yourself right before making the coffee, the coffee will taste terrible and you'll wonder why. It is that important, with espresso.

I also have a french press, but I got a cheap plastic one and I think I taste the plastic in the coffee, so I just make espresso.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49164253

I still have the same KRUPS electric grinder from 1994. It still is amazing and consistent. My parents have gone through 3 grinders in the space of time that I have owned my KRUPS. I don't think the 'new' ones are anywhere as good quality or consistent. At the time I bought it, I paid about $20 for it... what is that in today's dollars? $50?
 Quoting: tandym

I have a Krups espresso machine that I bought long ago for liks $150. People laugh at it, but it's not actually bad if you don't try steaming milk with it. And a cheap Braun grinder that cost $20 or 30 back in the day. I had to modify the Braun grinder to make the burrs closer together. It has the cheap flattish burrs that tend to crush the coffee, which is supposedly not as good as thicker more vertical burrs that cut more rather than crushing.

The Krups seems to be making too much pressure and it's not adjustable, so I use thick oily coffee like peaberry or I just discovered Santo Domingo, to plug up the puck and get nice slow extraction. It's not good equipment but I make it work.

By the way, if you're in the NYC area, Fairway Market is a fantastic place to buy coffee. I get my beans whole and grind them at home just before using. Once I bought preground "espresso" (Illy brand I think) and it was rancid and tasted horrible. It doesn't matter so much what you do with the beans, I freeze mine in the freezer, but you MUST grind them just before using. Esp. for espresso.

Ive been using a French Press for year.

I don't eat breakfast and the sediment was giving me a sour stomach so started filtering it with a regular brown paper filter. Much smoother now but I'd like to find a simpler solution that doesn't involve plastic or aluminum parts.

If I'm in the woods I take the time with a percolator over the fire and enjoy every sip. But if it's a week day and I hit snooze 5 too many times I stick in a k-cup and push "brew"

True.

The decent coffeemakers almost always have a high watt-rating.

Those with lower rating usually never get the water hot enough to make tasty coffee.

prefer percolator. Used to wake to the smell of my Grandmother percolating the morning coffee & frying bacon.
 Quoting: Lady Jane Smith

Oh yes this is the best memory, my grandmother then fried the eggs in the bacon grease.

And she'd have cream in her percolated coffee and make me hot chocolate with real heavy cream.

I use heavy cream in my coffee today.
 Quoting: LIL' ANGEL

It was Granny that got me started on the perc. When I was seven, I would wake to the smell. It was always before the sun came up. There would be other smells of a hearty breakfast.

Her coffee was the best, with fresh cream from the cows that we were getting ready to go milk ... after our coffee and breakfast. It was an honored ritual on the farm.

If you really wanna go old-school, try ROASTING your own coffee.

Warning, it's very hard to do. You might get a nice color outside the bean but the inside may be raw and it will taste bad.

I'm sort of kidding, I tried this and developed a little skill at it, then I discovered Fairway and just let them do it for me, buy their coffee that they roasted.

Steaming hot coffee every morning.

What do you use to make your coffee? I'm tempted to buy a french press and try that out.

True that, AC. And their organic kale on the second floor is some of the best I've had.

Place is a freakin zoo, but well worth it (and close enough to Zabar's to cover all needs).

Lisa, for the ultimate thrill, get a French press someday.

I have a perculator, husband left my French press when we moved from Cape Cod. (I forgave that one)

You know what else is good if you have a Magic bullet, put 2 tea spoon full of instant coffee in a cup with hot water, put in sugar, and 3 ice cubes.
Blend for a few seconds, add cream, blend again for a few seconds.
Place more ice in there and top with whipped cream.

*Rolls eyes* in ecstasy.

I need some now.5a

Must..........buy...........percolator!!!!!!!!!

hfhf

don't buy one bigger then you need tho. I have noticed that it does make a huge difference in how the coffee comes out.

Farberware makes a 2-4 cup, an 8 cup and a 12 cup. Bigger isn't better unless you really need to make 8 or 12 cups at a time. I like the vintage ones on ebay better because they were made in the usa back then and now they are all made in china.

Buy one that is closest to what you make on a daily basis, and i've found that they use slightly more coffee then auto drip machines.

1 liter of boiling water, throw in 3 heaping tablespoons of just ground coffee. Stir for 5 minutes. Pour through a fine brass mesh filter. Drink on the road to work. Fly out the car window after parking at work. Never touch the ground.

Heh, not only hard, dangerous aswell.

Roasting is done using very high temperatures, and you need to watch those beans constantly or they will catch fire.

Most roasting companies have like 1-2 fires a week...
(Of course they have both the equipment and experience to handle it, so it's no big deal when it happens there, but if you take up roasting in your own home, you might want to reconsider)

The vintage percolators mostly all have aluminum inside parts, except for farberware superfast models..........I'm pretty sure from what I've seen they are all stainless which is rare.
