That's what he should have gotten anyway, or a smackdown, for talking back to a cop. Cops don't like smartasses who think they know there "rights."

Be polite, be respectful, and if you have a problem with a cop, work it out in the courtroom.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45279706

I heard him being "polite". he didn't swear or threaten in any way. He stated the law.

The officer did NOT know the law and assumed the guy didn't either. He assumed wrong. So the cop didn't know his own job.

To "go to court" he needs to be charged with a crime. He wasn't. So why should he go through the hassle of being detained and then seeing a judge?

In court you plead "no contest" and accept the fine/terms. It's an admission of guilt. He did nothing to be charged with. THEN, when you go to court and if you want to SPEAK to a judge, you get to wait IN JAIL for a JURY trial. To avoid jail you just stand there with your mouth shut and accept whatever they throw at you. Even when innocent.

The guy broke NO LAWS and the police didn't know the "laws" they were hired to uphold. Simple. The police officers owe the guy for a lesson.

i thought the cop was being reasonable, just making sure he wasnt a felon. after he got the whole law book laid out, he let him go freely. id be more concerned if the cop didnt give a fuck. so goodjob on both parties.

Put yourself in the Peace officers shoes.

There is a guy walking down the street holding a gun, your job is to go over and talk to him about that.

I doubt many of you would have the balls and the nerve to do it calmly and professionally.

it's similar to being stopped and asked for ID for something mundane, like a cell phone, considering his state had lax gun laws.

I'm in a state where even concealed firearms are 100 percent legal, given you are not a felon / on probation. I can't imagine being stopped because it's, "of concern".

Let's take a moment to admit that the cop, himself, is not necessarily the one to blame. We have a crooked system where this behavior is promoted and encouraged. I feel like police are increasingly less concerned about keeping the peace, and more about controlling the peace.

I have a challenge for GLP:

Tell me one valid reason why a civilian taping their own traffic stop is a threat to the police. If I am taping my stop and do something wrong, it is more evidence for the cop to use against me in court. Tapes do not lie, its the beauty of video surveillance. It is just watching a unbiased view of the event. Therefore, I can think of no reason other than to hide police misconduct. They swore an oath to follow the law. They have a lot of power. Think they are the only people that can legally lock you up. If anyone else puts you in a car against your will, that is kidnapping with a 25 year prison sentence. That is a shit ton of unchecked power for a 23 year old kid with a big ego to have.

Well done to the law student. He was respectful and not a smart arse. You have to be very careful trying this shit because you are likely to get you arse whooped by the police. Especially if you are the type that has come under notice before. Ie if you are a petty crook and you carry a gun and you act like this you will and you deserve to get your arse whooped by the polcie. What you have to remember is that most police officers are trying to do their job well. I said most. But they are being influenced and pressured by the suppervisors and by current political issues. Further most are not trained as they should be by the establishment because if they were they would not do what it is they want them to do.
I for one am not lMAO when I see these video instead I pray that everyone remains calm and safe.

He would of got his day in court. Policeman would of denied or downplayed his dialogue, his buddy would of corroborated, and he would of spent the weekend in jail, probably got a couple hits with the baton, fined and a record of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest just to name a few.

His knowledge didnt win that, the camera did, just have someone always around video taping, and collectively other 3rd party witnesses.

Good luck.

the cop never pegged him with anything, and didnt elevate the situation when the citizen didnt comply. all he was doing was making sure he wasnt a felon or about to go kill somebody. and theres really nothing wrong with what happened and how it was handled on both sides.

basically all the cop did was say whats up to the guy, asked a few questions, made sure everything is ok and let him on his way scott free.

Re: Cop Gets Owned and Pwned by a Law School Student, LMAO
I give the cop credit for not acting condescending or confusing his personal ego with his power of authority to enforce the law. Cops are hired to enforce the law, not be a condescending, power tripping pricks like most cops appear to be once they inherit the smallest sense of power over others. He appeared willing to listen, and when confronted with the law, he was willing to uphold it and not take it personally that he might not have known as much as the citizen who has obviously studied it a bit. When the law was stated clearly, the cop did not make any derogatory gestures or quips for not being able to freely abuse his authority to screw with people, but allowed the citizen to walk free and went on his way.

Pretty good, only issues I see are 1. the kid sounded a bit nervous and edgy, like he loves to just school police and gets his jollies from it. carrying a gun down the road in open view? Why? And why the persecuted snot-nose tone to his speech? He might understand the law, but doesn't seem to understand people yet - he could have been a bit more chill so as not to scare the cold demeanor of officers who do deal with many hysterical psychos on a daily basis and 2. the officers should know the law a little better.

Better start having the cops check everyone out. Just in case.
