"I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?
I keep reading about countless people who do not qualify for federal subsidies saying they simply can't afford the premiums for Obamacare, even the cheapest plans, so they are opting to pay the tax instead. Yet what I am not seeing is the relevant follow up question "why not"? It is taken at face value that it is unaffordable. I would ask well, do you have a cell phone? Do you have cable tv? Shouldn't you cut back on those expenses first rather than opting out of health care?

Of course, but that won't happen. There are any number of serious flaws with this law, including that its supporters actually believed that humans would act "responsibly" and "do the right thing". And it relied on completely unrealistic figures of young healthy 20 somethings signing up to even out the risks to insurers. But, with a law that says even with a preexisting condition you can't be denied coverage - why bother? Why not just wait until you are sick and then enroll? It would most likely be cheaper than paying a several hundred dollar a month premium when you don't really go to the doctor, or maybe only once a year. There is ZERO incentive for someone to enroll unless they are sick and need medical care. Even the tax isn't much of an incentive because it would still be less than the cost of coverage. If the government had any balls they would make the tax something meaningful, like 10% or more, so that it was a better deal to sign up and get coverage.

It's only downhill from here.

Cable costs me 40 a month, if that. Cell phone costs 40 a month. The 80 I spend a month on these luxuries at a far cry less than the 500 a month it costs me for the cheapest obamacare plan. Even if I got rid of my cellphone internet and cable, where is the extra 400 a month going to come from? I'm just supposed to make it magically appear?

Great, good for you. You represent 0.00001% of the population. But that doesn't change the fact that most of your peers are not responsible and the way the law is structured there is no incentive to do so. My post wasn't meant as a dig to anyone who is legitimately struggling, or making necessary spending adjustments to make paying for health care a priority, so I am clarifying the record on that front. It was in part an observation that the media is not accurately reporting stories (shocker) and that the law is fatally flawed because it gives no incentive to sign up and many people who say they can't afford it, simply don't WANT to pay for something they need. Flawed.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Most people these days ONLY have a cellphone, and no landline. Are people supposed to be completely without a phone? I can see cutting back on the level of cable/satellite service one has, if you have all the channels or something, but for most people, this is cost-effective entertainment, as going out, even one night a month, might be more expensive than a whole month's cable bill. Sacrifice is one thing, but sacrificing so one can pay an unreasonably expensive and truly unaffordable health care policy, is ridiculous. My family of five's health care bill went up from $1,100 a month last year, to $1,400 a month this year, and I fucking pay it, all the while thinking about what a great retirement nest egg I could be building up with that money, if I wasn't having to hand it over to an insurance company. that's some change all right.

I want to live where you do, because my cable/internet bill is $250 a month, and my cell phone (2 people) is $150/month. If your insurance is $500/month and you don't qualify for subsidies or medicaid, then the government has determined that your income level is sufficient to afford the premiums. Which is why I said in my original post that eventually the income levels to qualify for subsidies will be decreased, probably sooner that later, because the insurance premiums are so high "regular" people with a job won't pay for it - when there is no incentive to do so.

Good god calm down before you have a stroke - and can't afford the hospital bill. There's nothing wrong with me, other than pointing out a major flaw in this legislation - no incentive on people to sign up until they are sick. And, I would welcome an exchange with someone who lists ALL of their monthly expenses (all of them), their income level, that they don't qualify for any subsidies, and they can't afford insurance premiums. My point in that exercise is that it is probably less of "can't" afford than "I don't want to because it's too expensive anyway and I can just wait until I'm sick". If you fall into the category of people scrimping and saving and doing what you can - THIS POST IS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU SO GET OFF THE SOAPBOX. But mark my words, I personally know LOTS of people who are completely irresponsible, dont' think they'll ever get sick, would rather spend their disposable income going to bars and partying than buying health insurance, and they have NO incentive to buy it (like the government figures assured us they would) and what it is doing is going to SCREW everyone else in the country through higher insurance rates and lower quality health care.

If you claim you don't know anyone like I have described, you're living in a bubble or lying.

If only the law was structured that way - which it is not. So ill people will sign up for coverage, because they need it, healthy people will not, just wait until they need it, and premiums are going to skyrocket through the ROOF for everyone else. This is a disaster of epic proportions that is probably going to tank the entire US economy in the next 5 years. And destroy the qualify of medical care at the same time.

It's worse than that, because people who believe "I'll just get insurance if I get sick, what's the harm" are missing the point that they could get into car accident, or have some other sort of catastrophic injury befall them unexpectedly, and while they have no medical insurance, they still need immediate trauma care which is enormously expensive, so it will be business as usual at the hospitals. So you're irresponsible decision not to get insurance because you don't need it right now is still f**king the rest of us paying through the nose for it. Because we are responsible. Like many other US laws and policies, we reward irresponsibility rather than the other way around.

A phone is tangible good that many use daily.... 280/month for a product that you only get to use if and only when youe spend another3000 in medical costs is just plain stupid. Americans may be dumb enough to vote for a dictator, but when it come tonmoney management for goods and services, the tangible good will win every time

You know why he lied - because if he told the truth he wouldn't have been re-elected and we wouldn't have this law. He's got the insurance companies by the proverbial balls, because if they speak up or complain, he's going to sic his dogs on them, i.e. the IRS, regulators, etc. anyone who doesn't play ball gets terrorized. I remain convinced Justice Roberts was being blackmailed in some fashion to come out with that opinion.

My point, good sir, is that in addition to the 12,000 a year that the cheapest plan would cost me, there is a 10,000 deductible that I must pay out of pocket before I can even use this "insurance". I haven't needed to visit a doctor or hospital for over 5 years, I hardly see why I need to make this "insurance" a priority of mine. Especially when all I'm doing is paying for others to use the services. If my deductible is 10k+ what is the difference between paying my medical expenses out of pocket vs the expense plus the premium? Regardless of what luxuries I should forfeit to pay the damn premium. Even if I did qualify for absolutely free insurance, I wouldn't want it because I dont need it, and I know its other people paying for it. Nothing can be free, in this regard. Maybe its pride, but I refuse to be a part of the sect that burdens others simply because I can.

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?

 Quoting: Air in the Stratosphere

Well this is not possible for all.
I know if this would have happened 5 years ago when my wife was in Nursing school and I was the only provider it would not have been possible. Yes we had internet and cable it was a bundle deal so the cable actually did not cost but like 10 dollars difference than the internet alone, as you know when in school you need internet most of the time. And going to the library was not an option seeing we lived to far from the college to drive there every time she needed to get on the internet.

We also had a cell phone and that is essential seeing that the instructors would need to call you from time to time.
so some one that is in that situation can not give up those things and pay for Obama care. Also note Obama care would cost way more than these things.

Also why even sign up and support this Obama care? it is a Sham to say the least.

By people signing up they are supporting this Obama care, if everyone will just not sign up for it this thing will fail.
So quit supporting this law, let it fail. Show this stupid man in the white house that we will not be bullied in to his scam .

Perfect - you fall into that category of people that, when you are driving and someone (most likely uninsured) hits you, and you are catastrophically injured and need trauma care, without insurance the hospital will absorb the costs of your medical care, and then pass it along to the rest of the public through higher bills ($15 aspirin sound familiar) which translates to higher premiums. It would be great if you could guarantee you'll never get sick, so of course you don't need insurance, but that is exactly WHY it is called insurance, because you can't predict the unexpected. "Why should I pay that" is just another way of saying "I'd rather spend my money on things I like and enjoy than something I don't really get any benefit out of".

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?
If the ones who don't sign up get sick and end up in the hospital...Who pays?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50299858

You are a dumbass!!!!!!

If you get sick and end up in the hospital, you will get the bills and you will pay them!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can not afford a one time payment in full, you will be paying monthly till the bill is paid in full!!!!

If you can not afford to pay at all, it is used partially as a write-off!!!!!!!!

Same as it ha always been!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 773971

It's worse than that, because people who believe "I'll just get insurance if I get sick, what's the harm" are missing the point that they could get into car accident, or have some other sort of catastrophic injury befall them unexpectedly, and while they have no medical insurance, they still need immediate trauma care which is enormously expensive, so it will be business as usual at the hospitals. So you're irresponsible decision not to get insurance because you don't need it right now is still f**king the rest of us paying through the nose for it. Because we are responsible. Like many other US laws and policies, we reward irresponsibility rather than the other way around.

It is not worse than that, it is exactly that.

The hospital works with you to obtain a reasonable pay rate.

If you find that you are overcome with the debt, you will file bankruptcy and the hospital utilizes a write off.

Out of 350M people only 30M do not have insurance, the unaffordable healthcare plan is a scam.

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?

Yeah, because i CHOOSE to. The government is completely rogue and doesn't have any right to force you to buy their garbage.

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?
No i like my phone & tv why should i give it up to pay for other lazy people who got free tvs and phones ( probably the packages too ) get a job and contribute to the economy
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49800841

I think you're missing my point - you wouldn't give up your phone and tv to pay for other people, you would do it to pay your own health insurance premiums as a first priority.
 Quoting: Air in the Stratosphere

My point, good sir, is that in addition to the 12,000 a year that the cheapest plan would cost me, there is a 10,000 deductible that I must pay out of pocket before I can even use this "insurance". I haven't needed to visit a doctor or hospital for over 5 years, I hardly see why I need to make this "insurance" a priority of mine. Did you miss the point about the 10k deductable? If my "accident" costs less than 10k in healthcare, then the insurance isn't doing anything. Plus, they as an insured motorist have clauses that mandate their insurance pas my medical expenses if they are at fault. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, it is still NY right to choose how i take care of myself. It is not your place or anyone else's to tell me what I need to buy. Car insurance is mandatory because driving I a privilege, so by that logic healthcare is mandatory because living is a privilege?

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?
This thread made me check the exchange and I'm looking at $300-500 a month amonth where it was $160 through work for better coverage. Cell phone is $50 and cable/internet $90. I can't cancel my phone and if I canceled my fios that's still only 1/5 the price of coverage...

Re: "I Can't Afford Obamacare" - But Do You Have Cable And A Cell Phone?
Health care IMO means the cost of dealing with an actual illness or injury.

My health care last year cost me $10, for anti-parasite syrup.

Obamacare is about health insurance. It does nothing to address health care costs. In fact, it only adds to them by installing another layer of bureaucracy. More make-work jobs.

The Amurkin hellth care system has ten paper-shufflers and mouse-clickers for every healer. That number will rise under Obamacare. Take a "physician's assistant". That fellow probably makes $100K a year. Or the "Director of Community Relations" at a hospital? Don't get me started.

My dad was a doc from about 1970 through the millennium. He never had a physician's assistant. Not necessary then, not necessary now. Make-work jobs in a phony economy, and the bill is handed to those who use the system.

I'm keeping my Obamascam money (not paying any fines, either) and spending it on the few luxuries I allow myself. I live simply and if I want to enjoy a little vacation now and again, I've earned it. I'm not filling some CEO's pockets, or their shareholders phony portfolios. I'm divorced from this system.
