Are crows natural carnivorous predators?
Three days in a row I have seen this huge crow eating over the birdbath.I thought he had bugs or something.I went out and there were flies all over the birdbath and the water thouroughly bloody. There was a small stripped to the bone skull(couldn't tell of what)and entrails. It was feaky and gross.I got out the hose, hosed it all off and refilled it.The next day, same thing.Hosed it off went to a movie, came back and the third repetition.Anyone familiar with this scenario and or behaviour?Thinking of removing the birdbath for awhile.

They do prey on other small and infant birds when pressed for food. See it all the time around my house, we have a large crow population.

I will say this however, they are very intelligent for a bird.

I watched a crow one time, take fallen walnuts from the tree in my front yard and put them in a bird bath I have. It would come back periodically to check on the walnuts to see if they were soaked enough to easily open with its beak.

Re: Are crows natural carnivorous predators?
I've seen one crow eating another crow before. I watched one kill the other. The fight was just pure evil. Even after the crow was dead the other crow kept pecking it's eyeball until it was litterally eating the dead crow. I went out & scared it off. I could not stand to watch it any more & I didn't want my kid to see it.

Re: Are crows natural carnivorous predators?
Crows are very intelligent, and they are aggressive.

One day I was sitting outside and a crow landed nearby and said "hello" to me. I was really surprised, because I didn't know they could talk like parrots do. I thought maybe it was someone's lost pet and called the vet. She told me that it was most likely a wild bird that had gotten injured at some time in the past, been treated for the injury, and released back into the wild and that it had probably learned to talk while in the care of humans.

It turns out that crows are related to mynas and, like mynas, crows can talk.

They are also bold and aggressive. I have a killer kitty cat, and he's faced off with a few crows in his lifetime. Other birds fly away when they see him coming, but the crows tend to stand their ground. They do eventually fly away like the other birds, though, because my cat is mean and not intimidated by anything. The crows will make themselves look as big and menacing as possible and walk towards the cat. Now the average cat would probably think twice about messing with them, but my cat keeps closing in on them until they fly away. Crows may be bold, but they're not stupid. It doesn't take them long to figure out that my cat is determined to kill them and isn't going to back off. (My cat also stalks deer, foxes, and big dogs, too. He acts like he thinks he's a cougar or something.)

The Twa Corbies

As I was walking all alane,
I heard twa corbies makkin mane,
The tane until the tither say,
‘Whaur sal we gang and dine the day?’

‘In ahint yon auld fail dyke,
I wat there lies a new slain knicht.
Naebody kens that he lies there,
But his hawk his hoond and his lady fair.

His hoond is tae the huntin gane,
His hawk tae fetch the wild fowl hame,
His lady’s tane anither mate,
So we may mak oor denner sweet.

Ye’ll sit on his white hausebane
And I’ll pick oot his bonny blue een.
Wi ae lock o his gowden hair,
We’ll theek oor nest whan it growes bare.

There’s mony an ane for him maks mane,
But nane sal ken whaur he is gane.
Ower his white banes when they are bare,
The wind sal blaw for evermair.
