NASA Admits They Cannot Predict What Will Happen If a CME Hits Comet ISON | |

( kdfw) They admitted that Ison was going behind the sun and it was possible it could "break into pieces". They then mentioned the speed at which it travels, and then after going behind the sun it will go right back out into space.. I found this odd that my small little news station would mention this a few days prior to this happening. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 3063399 United States 11/25/2013 02:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is even in some dubious way considered news-worthy? Why? How in hell could they possibly hope to predict the outcome of a CME and this totally strange, off-the-wall excuse for a comet - should one collide with the other? Has anyone ever before in the history of mankind ever seen such a thing happen? Or if something along this line has been observed, would it have happened so far back in the annals of history that it was long before mankind had the words to enable him to write about it? This makes the age old problem of How Do You Tell A Blind Man About A Tree seem utterly tame and easy by comparison. So NASA admits they do not have a clue what could or might happen should this event occur? Big deal. Did anyone really expect that they would try to predict such a cosmic event taking place and what it would do, how it would happen and what kind of actual effect it would have on the nearby planets should any be involved? No, for once (jut once in recent memory) NASA has admitted that they do not know JACK SHIT about this or anything else! No surprise there. The surprise is that NASA has actually told the truth for once! |

As it picks up momentum it becomes a type of comet. So, you could have a 4 mile diameter ball of ice with a 1km chunk of iron at its core. Now, if that got supercharged by a CME, it would be very bad if it went off course and head for Earth. Even if it didn't hit, it could drag charged particles from the CME. Like a giant inductor hurtling through space. |

If Anbody remembers last year the world was suppose to end on october 28th due to comet Elenin .. Nothing happens... Now we have November 28th where we know for sure there is a chance of something happening.. I just find that odd... I think half of the users on this board who post information on doomdates are paid shills themselves hired to spread this kind of propaganda... The boy who cried wolf... But lets be honest with ourselves... Even if nothing happens this year... The world sure is going downhill fast and the end seems near... Its not if but when. |

AhHa...now someone is getting it...IF there is a CME when the comet is on its way to us (or past us already) we could have a sustained ion transfer...as ions will take the path of least resistance... * BTW....NASA already said we would be 'double dusted' by ISON... Ofcourse Dr. A said this was not possible but I have been told by a family member who works with plasma told me it IS THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE... I guess we will see soon enough... |

I expect we will know in 7 days what we may be facing----heading our way. Actually, it says Dec 26th it will pass ABOVE earth's orbit by a considerable distance. Dec 16th-17th ISON is pass above Venus orbit on way out of solar system after Perihelion. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 36258082 United States 11/25/2013 03:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | On Nov. 28th, Comet ISON will pass through the sun's atmosphere, flying little more than a million kilometers above the sun's surface. It will be ~30 times closer to the sun than Encke was in 2007 and more likely to encounter a ferocious solar storm. Quoting: The Lost~Soul Karl Battams, an astronomer at the Naval Research Lab believes that Comet ISON would experience something more dramatic than the solar storm that hit Comet Encke back in 2007. "Any CME that hits Comet ISON close to the sun would very likely be faster, driving a shock wave with a much stronger magnetic field, frankly, we can't predict what would happen." Comet ISON will be passing over the sun's equator on Nov. 28th on the same side of the sun where a group of active sunspots was recently clustered. In other words, says Battams, "we're going to be in the 'hot zone' for CMEs." "It would be pretty new territory for us," says Battams. [link to science.nasa.gov] So we are entering uncharted territory here it seems, being at the peak of the solar cycle and all. I have a feeling they are keeping any worst case scenario possibilities pretty close to their chest at the moment. If ISON were to be a problem being closer to earth on its pass-through, the CME would have to hit it hard before the comet passes through the ecliptic on the back of the sun on Nov 28th. Since the comet passes above earth on Dec 26th away from the ecliptic, you would need a CME that pushes down on the comet's path so that the comet passes through the ecliptic later at close to Dec 26th when it is near earth for there to be a problem. On Ison's current path, it will be well above the earth as it passes on Dec 26th. |

If a blast from the sun pushes the comet away from the sun, the result would be a new trajectory that pushes the comet further from the earth - not closer to the earth. Now if the sun somehow drew the comet closer, then it could result in pulling the comet's escape route closer to earth as it leaves town. I find it amazing that the earth will travel directly through the tail debris of this thing - when the chances of this occurring are very remote. Almost looks like it was arranged somehow... |
