The antigovernment movement has grown in recent years and is rooted in the anti-Semitic, anti-black and anti-tax Posse Comitatus movement of the 1970s and 1980s.

Most recent recruits to the sovereign citizens movement found themselves in desperate situations, often due to the economy or foreclosure, and are drawn to the idea of easy money or living free of legal consequences.

Sorry genius, you're wrong. Most "sovereigns" are white. Also, the black and white sovereigns don't get along... there are actually somewhere between 5 and 8 different "sovereign citizen movements" around the country, depending on who you talk to. Their beliefs and philosophy are all similar, but differ in either A) the particulars of the root or method of their claims to "sovereignty" and thus "free action", and/or B) their methods of scamming the public and/or recruiting new members.

It's all very odd, IMHO. Suffice to say that, at least in my area (Carolinas) most of the S/C organizations are actually criminal enterprises which systematically perpetrate fraud against property owners.

Their favorite game around here are the "We Buy Houses" signs. They fish for people under threat of foreclosure, and offer to "buy" the house from them to stop the foreclosure action. What actually happens is that they "get paper" on the house from the owner, and then wait until after the foreclosure goes through, then make claims against the property... some will be fraudulent "repair liens", some will be outright claims of lawful transfer of title, some will be "accident" claims agains the bank's insurance, etc.

It's big business, and it's growing, too. The S/C group in our area has their own cadre of lawyers, and they are becoming well known for "winning" cases in very unorthodox ways...

I'm not saying there's no legitimate foundation to the philosophy or lawful precedent of any given S/C group... there may actually be a case or two where the foundations are legit (though certainly not all).

I AM saying that all the larger groups have attracted and are presently run by some pretty hardcore criminals, and that I wouldn't get involved with any of them, for your own safety. Period.

I know someone in Maryland who, due to an illness moved out of a house for several months. He returned to find someone else living there. He could not evict them as trespassers. Instead he has to go to court and evict them as if they rented the property and have not paid rent. These people get to live there free and destroy the house in the process. He cannot sue these people after they are forced out because they don't have anything, just live off the misfortune of others. This is an abuse of renters rights.
