Re: Update 04/09 -- Seismic uptick -- New Madrid, MO
I had a dream last night that a new harbor was being
built near us.

We're 25 miles from the Mississippi, so that was a
bizarre dream. I could hear the loud booms near by.

Just hope it's not prophetic, but the thread makes me
wonder...

By your logic, if a large earthquake happened at the same time a comet was visible back in December, 1811, then a large earthquake will happen in December, 2013 because there will be a large comet visible then. Therefore, by your logic, everything else that happened in December, 1811 will happen again in December, 2013. I know that's somehow 'logical" to you, but I can' follow.

" The comet was apparently visible during the New Madrid earthquakes in December, 1811. A report on the first steamship to descend the Ohio River as it approached the confluence with the Mississippi River states, "December 18, 1811. - The anniversary of this day the people of Cairo and its vicinity should never forget. It was the coming of the first steamboat to where Cairo now is - the New Orleans, Capt. Roosevelt, Commanding. It was the severest day of the great throes of the New Madrid earthquake; at the same time, a fiery comet was rushing athwart the horizon. " :comet:

A worry about all the nuke plants along the Mississippi river... A quake that large that would cause the ground to begin to liquify would cause the nuke plants along the river to sink.... bad news..

why do they always put Nuke Plants on Fault lines ?
 Quoting: Man Bear Pig

I guess the big problem is the structure of our planet, and the requirements of nuclear energy. You have to have a way to cool the plants, and that means rivers, oceans, etc. (Near population centers.), and then if you look at all the fault lines around the world, and the "dormant" fault lines, and the "dormant" volcanoes it's obvious that our planet changes dramatically over time.

I think it's the short sighted nature of humanity, and our wish for things to stay static. If you look at the Sahara desert, and the middle east those areas used to be fertile compared to what they are now.

The world changes. We should be learning better ways to adapt, exploit, and conserve instead of trying to battle these changes.

possible. I was pretty sure the big one could be held off till 2015, but things have changed. Even so, still not thinking it will be on the new madrid.

No, that is not the logic. The logic is found here:

Johann Karl Burckhardt computed the first orbit for this comet. Using three positions obtained between March 26 and April 19, he determined a rather uncertain orbit which indicated the comet would pass closest to the sun on 1811 September 22 at a distance of 1.77 AU. Burckhardt computed a new orbit during June. Although still parabolic, it indicated the comet would pass perihelion on September 15 at a distance of 1.13 AU. From this orbit, H. W. M. Olbers (Bremen, Germany) noted the comet would become a very bright object during October 1811.

Re: Update 04/09 -- Seismic uptick -- New Madrid, MO
Another good one I've read is the connection to the salt domes / Oil deposits/ natural gas deposits, and the new madrid.

The sinkhole in LA seems to be connected to the fault line as well. I wonder if the ground liquifies around the Mississippi basin, the rush of water will cause the salt domes to collapse, bringing down 25 to 100 miles of the gulf coast with it, and the great lakes would flood into the Mississippi river basin creating the Mississippi gulf. This would then completely change the river systems in North America, and would alter weather patterns around the entire continent. The new gulf would be radioactively contaminated spreading that contamination into the weather patterns and down into the gulf of Mexico.

All that's needed would be that doom quake, and it would cause an incredible cascade of dominoes.

I had the same dream ... in 2009. Was more like a vision. I was working on Google Maps and saw the Great Lakes open up and flood to the GoM.

A few months later I moved, behind the St. Francois Mountain Range ... [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

I figured the precambrian geology would help protect against the quake.
Most of the region, however, has been mined heavily for lead and lots of little towns were built on top of the mines.
When the New Madrid decides to blow, there is going to be more loss of life than one can imagine ... verysad

With all the mega quakes that have been happening worldwide in the past 3 years, I am surprised it has not had a big one yet.

I assume if Ison makes it around the sun, and comes past the earth, this could be a trigger if it is electrical like Jim Mccanney and other scientists say.

Yep Mr. SG loves to fish. The Mississsippi does produce some good fishin holes... There are all kinds of "cut off" lakes around my neck of the woods. The lakes are formed from the depressions in the land where the river once flowed but as rivers courses change and move it left behind some great places to fish. cheers

If you dig a little you can find the geological studies. The New Madrid was a hobby of mine for a while.

The interesting thing is that these studies came out after the new horizon cover up. The oil that ruptured there, and continues to leak into the gulf was kind of holding things in place. When that pressure was removed from the ground it has been dissolving the ground underneath the gulf. Water and gas travel to the path of least resistence, hence the sinkhold in LA. basically everything is shifting down into the gulf down there.

With that the New Madrid fault line traveling down the Mississippi now has a release in relative pressure being placed on it.. I kind of imagine it like when you place something on a spring, if you lighten the load.. the spring will pop.

I'm no geologist, I'm definitely an amateur, but this is some of the worst case scenario stuff I've read from people that are more skilled in the science then I.
