Mulva User ID: 49326948 United States 12/26/2013 05:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Very well done, good find and thank you. Quoting: MuldersFox 49096500 I have been saying this was coming for a few years...I used to live in St. Louis area...last big one was 1967...moved a bit northeast but I am still in the danger zone should a massive one hit...and all of my family and friends will die in the St. Louis area...but they don't listen to a word I say...they think I am nutz. It is coming...I believe God, who is longsuffering and patient, is about to shake the world...His wrath will be unmistakeable. God have mercy on us and may He shorten the days of His children. I moved from CA, where I was in both the Northridge and the Bay Area quake. A few years back we had a 5 point EQ just east of St. Louis in IL. I felt it 60 miles away and it was stronger than either of the quakes in CA. Quakes are very much different and more violent in the midwest than they are on the coasts because of subduction. In geology, subduction is the process that takes place at convergent boundaries by which one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate and sinks into the mantle as the plates converge. Regions where this process occurs are known as subduction zones. Rates of subduction are typically centimetres per year, with the average rate of convergence being approximately two to eight centimetres per year.[1] Plates include both oceanic crust and continental crust. Stable subduction zones involve the oceanic lithosphere of one plate sliding beneath the continental lithosphere or oceanic lithosphere of another plate due to the higher density of the oceanic lithosphere. That is, the subducted lithosphere is always oceanic while the over-riding lithosphere may or may not be oceanic. Subduction zones are sites of high rates of volcanism, earthquakes, and mountain building.<snip> [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Do you recall the 5.8 earthquake in Mineral, VA, on August 23, 2011? My two story house in New Jersey is built on a slab. I was sitting in the family room next to the kitchen when it happened. My kitchen and dining room chandeliers were swaying back and forth. I stood up in disbelief and watched my 18'x12' kitchen floor "wave." My town is 250 miles from Mineral, Va. Wow, nutmeg. I am glad you were not hurt. I was sick that day and did not feel it at work (sick at work, not smart. .) but others DID feel it and ran downstairs. This was in a two-story high school. Earth lets quaking travel a LONG distance here. In the big New Madrid quake, they recorded that church bells rang in their towers on their own as far away as Boston. We felt it all the way over to Long Island... |

It was around 12:30 am and woke us up. I looked around the place expecting to see a car in a tree. All the critters around the place where up and looking all around but real quiet. I made a thread but can't find it in the search function. |

A waterway that is deeper & more seasonally reliable than the Mississippi River, that is. Mississippi River is 18 to 30 feet deep. Channel is open for navigation with exception of when ice freezes river solid in winter. Or during a drought, like the one that we had a couple of years ago. Ozark Granny (OP) User ID: 31027866 United States 12/26/2013 06:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The precursors are there with the swarming quakes. Yellowstone is just like the New Madrid, it is not if; but when. We would be useless human beings if we sat and worried about the potentials that mother earth can throw at us. All we can do is be aware of the potential dangers and prepare the best we can, not only with bacon, beans and bullets, but in our minds. At least that is what I try to do and keep an eye on things so that we are not caught unaware! Last Edited by Ozark Granny on 12/26/2013 06:42 PM Thread: ARE THEY GOING TO CRASH THE INTERNET? Quoting: Reinvigorated Being Knowing this area as I do, it hurts my heart to even think of what could happen. Most of the area, within the NMFZ, is old and poor. Years ago, I think it was '98, we had the 100 year flood. It flooded several towns on the Mississippi. I helped sand bag, and when I wasn't doing that I was delivering food and supplies. That event really etched a memory. Poor little babies that lost their homes, businesses flooded, the gross loss of animal life. It was incredible. When I think of all the families that live in old brick homes that are not up to code and add the damage of the mighty Missisip on to that ... When the NMFZ occurs, it will be the biggest disaster America has ever seen. I think the only other natural disaster that can trump it is Yellowstone or maybe the San Andreas. Anonymous Coward User ID: 36502751 United States 12/26/2013 07:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | USGS sometimes takes days to report quakes in the Arkansas area and some, that clearly show up on the seismos are never posted, for some reason, maybe a valid one, but still. They are very slow to update the quake maps and most do not make it to the national maps of quakes. They are listed only to local shake maps by [link to folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu] If a large event is going to happen on the New Madrid chances are it will be picked up by [link to quakepredictor.net] first. Usgs will tell you about it after the fact, not much use in that from a protection standpoint. The Marked Tree area produced an 8.0 in 1811. That areas helicorder/seismo was off for days recently. You would think considering the history of that area it would be given a bit more priority. |

I follow them on FB, as well as their Geiger counter readings. And yeah, one would think that there would be priority for this info, but I have a sick feeling that the folks in charge do not think the same way as I. Some of the links you have to click on twice to make it come up. And a bunch of them are showing something wierd at the 12 minute mark, like at 1242hrs today (ie, 12 minutes after the 1230hrs ticker starts its course). But a couple of others show anomalies at like 1312hrs, so I am thinking it is something going on at the 12 minute mark. Anything happen at 1242 today in the region?
