Muskegon judge orders arrest of 'sovereign citizen' for contempt: 'Take him to jail'

MUSKEGON, MI – Muhhammad Abdel Hakeem, a Muskegon man claiming to be a “sovereign citizen,” caused quite a scene early Thursday morning in the courtroom of Muskegon County 60th District Court Judge Michael J. Nolan, and Hakeem was subsequently arrested for contempt of court.

Hakeem, 36, made a slew of poor decisions, according to the judge, at his appearance for a preliminary examination Thursday, Nov. 7, that ultimately landed him more jail time.

Court records indicate he was sent to jail for 93 days.


“Defendant refused to cooperate with court proceedings or obey orders of judge," court records indicate.


It all began Thursday as Nolan approached the bench and the courtroom was asked to stand – a normal procedure when a judge takes the bench.

As everyone else in the courtroom rose for Nolan, Hakeem and a woman who police have identified as his wife walked out.

When he was requested to come back into the courtroom by Muskegon County Sheriff’s Deputy Timothy LaVigne, Hakeem walked in but refused to sit at the defense table as ordered by Nolan.

Nolan explained the process to Hakeem, who denied that was his name, and urged him to cooperate or he would face the consequences.

A similar scenario occurred at Hakeem’s arraignment after Hakeem claimed "diplomatic immunity."

Nolan wasn’t in the mood for another fiasco on Thursday and told Hakeem so.
