Cats recognise their owners' voices but never evolved to care, says study
Japanese researchers tested cats' reactions to their owners, suggesting that because cats "domesticated themselves" they never needed to take notice

I agree to an extent with this. I'm more of a dog lover, but I've had a few cats and two stand out in my mind when this article comes up. Two of the smartest animals I've ever had. They were honestly more like dogs than cats. Come when you called, walked with me on my morning walks, very loyal and rarely left our yard unless it was to chase off other animals. Miss them little boogers.

I used to think the same thing until we got a cat about 5 yrs ago, this cat is like a dog, runs to you when you come home I've even taught it to do tricks, walk on 2 back legs, play dead, roll over etc I know most are not like this but she''s pretty cool & smart
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

At one point, we had 4 adopted cats in our home. It was a bit much I will say but they were cool as hell….Such attitude….I totally respected my cat Bean….He was declawed at home by a crazy owner and grew up PISSED about it….He would attack me with vicious bites out of nowhere….I loved every one of them but he was my special little asshole….

Cats are arrogant and independent because they are solitary hunters unlike dogs which are pack animals. This is the real reason.

Cats are not even useful for this. They displace native species that would kill off the rodents better.

The biggest problem is toxoplasmose gondii, a deadly cat parasite that can cause brain cancer, birht defects in children, cysts and chnage bahaviour. It also kills sea and other mammals, which is very sad and absolutely unnecessary.

Deadly cat feces killing thousands of marine mammals

Despite the continued online popularity of the videoed interaction between a nuzzling cat and curious dolphin, scientists are pointing out that the intersection between the two species could be having a catastrophic effect on the marine mammals.

A disturbing trend was found in a six-year study that monitored marine mammals in the Pacific Northwest. More than 5,000 dead marine mammals (dolphins, porpoises, sea otters, seals, sea lions and three species of whale) were observed, many of them suffering from encephalitis (brain swelling) long associated with Toxoplasma gondii, a single-celled parasite. The study was published by the National Institutes of Health in 2011.

The study concludes by observing that “the behavioural aspect of cats that cause their owners to become attached to them are still undetermined.”

It's the toxoplasmose bug. It makes them love cats.

Re: Cats recognise their owners' voices but never evolved to care, says study
I think the real issue is the quality of research these days. Young people with very little real experience are tasked with performing some sort of convoluted experiment dreamed up by a bored professor.

Meanwhile ... I never liked cats until I found two little kittens on the side of the road ten years ago. I raised them and found -- much to my surprise -- that they had distinct personalities, intelligence, and were affectionate. The fact that the research may show that cats "domesticated themselves" just makes me respect them even more. I like the fact that they don't give a damn. It seems an appropriate response to the BS in the world today.

I agree 100% we have 2 cats and both do what they want and basically are good for nothing but allowing us to feed them and clean their litter box.
Where they trick us into believing that they like us is when were allowed to pet them and they purr. Basically, they allow us to do that until they are done having their back scratched.
But yes, we love them.
