I think most people's (maybe valid concern) is that China will target a civilian plane to antagonize the situation. I really would not put it past them.

Lol. China's not got it's latest fighters in service yet (2017 apparently) and Japan is ordering F-35s as their next gen fighter, so they clearly don't have those yet lol.

Like I said, I really would not put it past them. They have no qualms with killing (at a conservative estimate) around 80 million of their own people.

The Chinese have locked themselves into a trap of their own making. They either have to accept that Japanese planes are crossing the supposed ADIZ as they wish or they have to start a war by killing world citizens on a Japanese airline.

China cannot just unilaterally declare an air defense zone over international air space. Nobody owns that space.

This B-52 training exercise was scheduled long before China's unilateral declaration. The U.S. has no choice but to go through with the exercise as-is because doing otherwise would be de-facto giving legitimacy to China's unilateral declaration over international air space.

Presumably, in this case, Japan could "surrender" by agreeing to China's claim to the islands. Obviously they wont do that.
