It doesn't get so cold here that often, but when it does, it's nasty for the outside cats. I can't save the world, but maybe I can help a few animals. |

We used a dog crate - put the heated pad in it, lined it inside with high-density foam we had in the garage, and covered the whole thing with several blankets and rugs. I draped an old shawl over the front so they can still go in and out, but it holds in more heat. They curl up in there and between the heated mat and their body heat, they get nice and cozy. You can buy a heated water bowl for about $20-25. Keeps the water from freezing. Right now it's below zero in our area, so I add some hot water now and then. Make sure they have plenty of food, too. They need extra food in cold weather to keep their metabolism higher. |

The house cat isn't a wild animal even though it acts it when abused or abandoned.. its very much a domestic animal that requires the help of people to survive some times they can do it but that's more luck then anything... |

They are full of feral cats. Many of course die, we've saved 2 kittens from the airfield. One sitting with me now. I'd rather set up something for them then be accused of wrong doing. |

Kitties get frostbite, primarily their feet (which means they die early not from the chronic pain, but from infection in deadened tissue), and their ears. That is if the cold doesn't kill them first. Heater, definitely and right now. Tomorrow see if you can get advice locally how to help them because the cold is killer RIGHT NOW. In the meantime, do you have animal services for strays..we have Every Creature Counts here in CO where they don't euthanize them. Can you open a shed or something for them? And then make sure the shed is heated in some way that won't cause a fire. At the very least get them shelter. Mere hay is not enough. The stress of the cold will also make them susceptible to illnesses and cold viruses. I don't mean to be harsh at all OP, and am warmed by the fact that you care. But cold kills them because they also have domestic genes which means they are not designed to withstand harsh winters. |

C. User ID: 90675 United States 12/06/2013 08:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you for posting, OP :) I have a hard time with the outside cats, too. They give me a mental dilemma that just tears my heart out. I won't feed them (unless I'm *really* drunk). We've only had two, really, in the last two years. The first one was Roland. The gunslinger. We grappled about what to do about him. (We have two rescue housecats, who don't go outside). He ended up getting hit and we buried him. It was sad, because he was so cool. Now, there's another one and I won't even talk to him. I completely ignore him and it's hard for me to do that. We haven't seen him since it started snowing, so I am hoping that he is holed up in a barn. |
