My family is completely comprised of people who couldn't care less, so growing up it was never a realistic goal to get there. Now that I'm older I've been saving up to do exactly that but it's a slow process; I'll get there though. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, it's given me even more motivation to make this goal a reality. You did a great job of painting a picture for me to imagine it, which is awesome in and of itself. Sorry I can't contribute any cool stories of my own but one day I will be able to do so. |

Most of my family is the same but I'm older now so it's now their choice. It really WAS cool though.. Mexico is not very far away and it's cheap so it's completely realistic to make it happen, good luck! You'll love it. |

But I must say..you have to walk like a horse for 2 days just to get there..but when you are there you are ALONE!! |

Quoting: Slick Vick So now that I'm living in Mexico and I'm only 45 minutes from the Ruinas Mayas of Tulum (better known as the Tulum Ruins), I took a trip down yesterday and I must say, it was fucking phenomenal! The place is like a small walled city and the inside is just absolutely gorgeous. The architecture, the landscape, the carvings and design, all awesome. After reading so much about the mayans, including information about these ruins and some of the odd and unexplainable stories behind them, it was truly amazing to be there. The place is like paradise! It has a stunning beach - the most amazing beach I've ever been to in my life. There was also had a very tranquil and intuitive vibe about the place, I was lucky to be there in the early morning on a weekday so there were only a couple people when I arrived which really gave me some time to look around the entire compound and absorb it before hundreds of tourists arrived. Anyway, all I have to say is WOW.. I can see why the Mayans choose this spot, on this beach to build this place. Absolutely fucking amazing in every which way.. I also scoured some of the more remote parts of the beach up against the bluffs, hoping to find some jewels or bones or something.. I definitely found a non-human tooth (maybe crocodile or panther or something) and I also found kind of an oddly reflective piece of seashell or bone that looked like it had been used as a part of a necklace because it has a hole through it at a rather odd angle.. When I went about a mile south of there to a baddass, super-relaxing little bar on the beach, these kids who worked there (whom I was hanging out with) told me that there are a lot of UFO sightings in that area and they've seen them on numerous occasions.. The one guy told me he had seen a UFO directly over the ruins, less than a couple thousand feet high one time and it took off at lightspeed.. Has anyone else been there or have any cool stories about the place? No cool stories, but I've been to Tulum. One of the highlights of my life so far! I don't know where you get your delusions, laser brain. |

Dragged along a bunch of friends I went to cancun with and forced a little culture on them. They thought it was stupid at the time but now it's easily the most memorable part of the trip and we still talk about it often. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1554376 Hahaha, yeah I was telling this one guy on the beach - "You know man, out of all the beaches I've been to, and I've been to some amazing ones, this is by far the most amazing beach I've ever seen." and the guy said "Yeah, and my wife was all pissed that I wanted to come see the ruins and the second she saw the beach her jaw dropped!" |
Slick Vick (OP) User ID: 51090531 Mexico 12/07/2013 04:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I went there a couple of years ago, it really is incredible. Saw a bunch of tourists leaving rubbish on the beach below the cliffs, which is always nice. Quoting: ThreeDog So many lizards! Assholes! No respect, I swear.. By the time I was leaving it was getting packed, and that was about 11:30 am.. I kind of felt like 99% of the people who were there really had no clue about the mysteries of the Maya and were just simple-minded tourists, which kind of pissed me off. I guess it doesn't matter, but it seemed to bother me since the place had a pretty deep meaning for me. Last Edited by Slick Vick on 12/07/2013 04:20 PM |

I found an amazing little bar called Bar Adelita about 1 mile south of the ruins where the beach opens back up - I'd HIGHLY recommend it.. Very beautiful and unique. I'm living in Playa del Carmen and I'm considering moving down to Tulum after seeing the area and atmosphere. It's much more remote and beautiful there in my opinion. Spent a good several hours there. OP is right, it is absolutely beautiful there. What is little known to many tourists that visit the place is that there are numerous water-cavern entrances to the north and south of where the beach opens up. They are underneath the cliffs on either side of the beach and are extremely difficult to get into on account of the fierce waves that batter the rocks. Heard a few have died trying to get in while some others died by being unable to get out... Would love to visit again though! |

Lots of little groups of people taking endless snapshots and huddled around a guide who never stops talking. Waited patiently out of sight until they had all gone and then had my own Caribbean beach for the night. |

Clever how the high priests of that culture constructed the temple altar so that a beam of light hits it during certain times of the year. They must have been great astronomers and mathematicians. The Mayans were very very small in stature if one takes into account the height of the lintels of the doorways. And yes, the site is dramatic, pure, and breathtakingly beautiful. It is quite a memory. |
