Never again, learned my lesson. Best thing I think is to get a router and hook that up. A hardware firewall would be much better than any software. Use that in conjunction with some good anti spyware/virus programs and your good to go. |

Norton, Kasperski and McAffe are not good choices. Panda is OK as well, but not an AV product that I would use. For spyware I would recommend a combination of 2 or 3 appz. I use Ad Aware SE 1.06, Spybot S&D 1.4 and Spy Sweeper. |

I had such experience many times. Not only that. What if you want to optimize the existing OS rather then do a clean install? IT is realy important to scan a computer for viruses if it is infected, whether you want to do a clean install or not. |

a-bird User ID: 100837 United Kingdom 06/01/2006 12:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ive used AVG Free for ages and am very happy with it. For detecting spyware I use Ad-aware SE, and Spybot search and destroy. I also have Spywareblaster running to block stuff too. Ccleaner is a great program that gets rid of all your rubbish on your c drive as well. All these progs are free and you can find them all at: [link to www.filehippo.com] |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 24586 United States 06/01/2006 01:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i can't understand why you guys are still using microsoft/windows crap. linux ubuntu! _____________ Can you run mainstream programs on linux now? When I tried Redhat a few years ago, I couldnt run Quickbooks, Halflife, Word, Excel etc... There were other programs that you could us instead, but they didn't work as good. for example when I would open an excel spreadsheet in Redhats alternative program (i forgot what it was like freeOffice or something)it would change up various formatting and things. |

AVG is well worth getting. Adaware pro and leave adwatch running in memory CA pest patrol is quick and good Spysweeper from webroot is well thorough Xsoftspy SE is another excellent proggy and spywareblaster from javacoolsoftware is also well recommended. |

Lynx User ID: 16717 Finland 06/01/2006 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Linux sucks, I bought three of them Linspire, Xandros, and Libranet. I've tried 25 different distros, most of the programs crash, most of the time programs don't install right. I have hosed my linux system and had to reinstall more times in one week than all of the years I have used Windows. Linux is a big farce, difficult to work with and extremely buggy. Linux has a long long way to go before its even close to Windows 98. I highly recommend Windows XP. Save yourself the headaches. ==== LoL. Are you serious??? you BOUGHT?! a linux? news flash, it's FREE! always has been. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 100873 United States 06/01/2006 02:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I highly recomend Ewido anti - malware, I recently found 476 infections on my work computer. amazing how gullible some people are, honestly they will click , download ,anything. This computer was hijacked by several parties and being used to host casino games, and p2p dloads of music. ewido finds nasties that spybot and adawre doesnt. |

P'd User ID: 91332 United States 06/01/2006 02:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I thought buying a linux program I would get a better quality OS, but that is very far from the truth, hahaha screw me huh? Yep, after a year of giving it the benefit of the doubt I reformatted my Ext2 and reiser HD's to Fat32 and NTFS. It is a BIG LIE if somebody tells you its more reliable than Windows. Linux is a joke, even if it is free. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 100966 Italy 06/01/2006 06:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK. Linux is great for server use mainly. As far as using Linux as a home destop OS it is OK for a small amount of advanced users. I use Ubuntu Linux at home (the live vesion) and Suse (some of the servers I maintain) and Knoppix (as a usefull tool) at work, but since I like to use some programs that cannot run on Linux even when I use emulators like Wine my main OS is Windows XP at home. AVG is a good antivirus for people who are not prone to getting many viruses, but for a person like myself who is at times targeted by warz hackers it is a piece of crap. The best solution by far, so far was Bit Defender Pro and DOS version of Avast. Like in everything else experience is what counts when dealing with PC and networking issues, and some people are less experienced (read: many people on GLP do not maintain computers and computer networks for a job, and even system/network administrators and PC service technicians have diferent perferences as far of which software they use for different purpuses when dealing with computer issues). Having written all this I wish that none consider what I wrote condescending or rude in any other way, and that everybody who is happy with using AVG continue to do so, but as far as saying that it is the best peace of AV software out there, I can assure you that thiis is not so. |
